My dad had a fish tank about 10 years ago and while cleaning out my garage I found a bucket of his old supplies. Most of the stuff was broken or old chemicals and food I obviously can't use, but there were a few items that were in one piece and in pretty good condition. I need to know if I can safely sterilize the resin and plastic items using a part water part vinegar solution and soaking the items in it (at least that's how I usually clean my fish related things).
Here are the items:
- A Resin Piece of Driftwood
-Plastic Aquarium Plants
- A Heater
- An Air Pump
I tested the heater in a bucket of water and it still works properly, but I'm not 100% sure I would use it because I'm afraid it may give out and stop working. I'm not planning to use it in my molly tank as I already have a heater. It would just act as a spare or I may use it in any future tropical tanks. I don't think I can soak the heater so is there any other ways I could clean it?
The air pump obviously wasn't in the tank and it still works, so I figure as long as I attach new airline tubing it won't matter if I use it and couldn't pose any threats to the tank. I'm not really sure if I even need to sterilize it but if I do, can somebody suggest a way as to how I can with breaking it?
The plastic plants are in really good shape so I figured I could just save them for future tank designs if I were to expand my fish-keeping past just mollies. They are each black and white plastic plants so I could do something cool with that to make a cute design. I'm planning to soak them in the vinegar water solution and then just rinse them very, very well. Same goes for the resin driftwood.
His fish died of old age rather than a disease if that makes any difference in how I should sanitize this stuff (assuming it's even able to be sanitized but I assume it is).
Thanks in advance for your help!
