Stealth Heater Recall

Hello Everyone! I have just received an important message from Foster and Smith Aquatics about Marineland Stealth Pro heaters (25W, 50 W, 75W) that were purchased since October 2009. It had been found that there is a wiring problem.

It causes the heaters to overheat or break during normal use. It can result in "property damage" (dead fish) and is hazardous to the consumer. DFS suggests that you unplug the heater from the wall, wait 15 minutes for it to cool, and then take it out of your tank.

UPG (united pet group) is supposedly handling the recall- replacement heaters (Visi-Therm Delux) or a refund check is being offered.

The number they give is (800) 338-4896

I actually had a malfunctioning Marineland heater go kapoof in one of my betta tanks. Luckily I was in the room at the time and was able to get my boy out of the tank and take care of it.

I hope this information helps!

(Oh, and mods, I wasn't really sure where this should go so that people would see it, feel free to move it)

Rae, I am re-opening your thread.

I was mistaken and directed everyone to the link about the stealth pros only.

I just received a letter from United Pet Group.
There is also concern about the Stealths, not just the stealth pros.
The wattage and model number can be found printed right below the name of the heater on the outside.

Members, if you have any questions, they have probably already been addressed.
Please use the Search Feature as there are several threads about this situation.

Here are the wattage and model numbers effected:

Marineland Stealth:
25W - model# ETP25
50W - model# ETP50
75W - model# ETP75
100W - model# ETP100
150W - Model# ETP150
200W - model# ETP200
250W - model# ETP250

HI Nate, I merged your post with Lea's most recent thread about the topic.

I received that letter today.
It was actually 2 pages long.

The comp that's hooked up to my scanner is a dinosaur so I didn't bother to scan the letter. (it would have taken 2 weeks lol)
So thanks for posting it.

I spoke to UHG today. Imo, they are being quite accommodating and trying to be fair.

They are offering to replace the heaters with their glass models (formerly called deluxe, I believe) or offering a refund. Of course, you have to send the recalled heater back.
Through their research on pricing, they are basing the refund price that was listed in the Foster and Smith Aquatics catalog.

Haven't seen this link posted... I thought it might be useful. It's from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Now I'm wondering if I should be worried about the 10w stealth pro heater in my betta tank. It doesn shut off like it is supposed to, so I'm constantly checking the temp so I don't fry Bubba.
This is random, but the fish in that pic from the CPSC are GloFish (I kept them for quite a while and will get more as soon as I get my tank problem-free. They're cool little fish)

The 10w isn't on the recall list but it wouldn't hurt to call them.
Especially if it's not shutting off like it's supposed to.

Okay. Just emailed them about the problem. They said I should get a response within about 24 hours.

I just received 6 heaters from United Pet Group. I called them around 2 weeks ago. What they haven't sent was the return package. I'm guessing it's in route.

I have a 10w stealth pro that I bought two weeks ago and sometimes it doesn't work at all so I left it on yesterday when I went to school. Well, I came home and Omega's tank was 90 degrees Farenheit!! I was so scared! I unplugged it and put on a couple fans in my room, where my tank is and this morning his water was down to about 80. It's 77 now, but I was still worried. Then I saw the recall on all the other models.. So, wouldn't this mean there is a problem with the 10w as well, especially since I've noticed other people having problems with their 10w... I'm not quite sure what to do... Thanks, Amanda

I've had the same issue with mine. I contacted United Pet Group who makes them and they said to send it in for warranty. If you search for stealth pro heater, the manufacturer website should come up. Find the contact us button and ask about sending it in o the warranty because it it's not functioning properly. It took about a week for them to respond, so if you live in an area where it's still cold or you keep your home cool, you should call them. Otherwise you could wait for an email response.
