Lol MDS yes it’s addicting! I’m looking at the new 4 in the qt 45 and my wife asks where are they going. I say I’m not sure bought these impulsively. She show me a pic of other discus and says can you get 2 of these. Love my wife .
I now have 25 and 7 tanks running . The 75 with the new Hans are doing great. A few hickups along the way. But so far it’s seems if I remove the not eating fish and q t for a week or so they come back stronger. Had one just stop eating. It went in for a few weeks and in doing great now. Next was constipaded. Put it in with salt and it to is back in the 75 and doing great. Will be moving another today for constipation and hoping it works out too.
Thing is the 75 just isn’t big enough for 12 discus. So I have to figure out what to do. In the main tank I now have 3 pairs that are laying eggs weekly. Nothing productive but also no fighting going on. Tank is still peaceful. But I may try breeding. But again I need tanks. Big if on breeding. Just don’t think I will be able to sell the fry. Than what do I do? All a debate now. But first I’m trying to buy used tanks. Trying for 2 50g acrylic. Though I’m afraid my man cave will turn into corals fish room.
On another note I got 8 more rams from coral and they are unbelievable. He sent me 2 blacks and wow they are great. All black with a red tinge on the fins. Nicest rams I’ve ever seen. Just they move way to fast and it’s hard to get a good pic .

 

What strain are those new 4- tiger turquoise?

 

Yes 2 blue carnation tigers and 2 red tigers. Got these from Kenny’s. Who is the sole importer f Forrest discus. So very happy so far .

 

Here’s a video of the Hans discus.

Most are doing well. Seems the white leopards are now at the bottom of the eating order. Both have done some time in the 15. The first came back eating but is still small and the second has had no change. Not sick just not eating like the rest.
As to the new guys from Kenny’s. They are unbelievably skittish. They hide whenever I come into the room. They eat when I move away. They look great when I can see them but kind of scary that they’re this skittish. Also been reading that it seems the Asian discus carry some diseases they are immune to but if mixed with the Hans the Hans may all die. So that’s a problem . Last time I added 2 Uncle Sams discus to my Hans without a problem. But these guys are a lot more skittish and do have me worrying .

 

Well I got another tank. A 125.
looks like a nice tank but it does have crazing on the front panel.
Not sure what’s up with the crazing. I’ve read a lot on it and it doesn’t seem to be a problem. Talked to another keeper and he suggested putting a 4” piece of 1/4” acrylic welded over the craze on the inside. Sound good to me. But before I do anything I’m going to fill it some today and if it hold all the way tomorrow and see if the craze becomes bigger.

 

And a video of the Hans discus. The checkerboards are easily 1” bigger than the rest. The white leopards are now on the bottom of the growth chart. but check out the rams I got from coral. Just beautiful looking fish.

I just have seen this thread for the first time. I admit I've never had the discus itch, because whenever I have seen them at a store they just...sit....there....breathing.... and I sort of thought that was all they ever did. Yours seem really active and wow are they beautiful!! I still don't think I could ever keep them unless I took down all my other tanks, but I am definitely enjoying following your builds.
I love acrylic tanks, and I think the blue background makes the reds and oranges in the discus really pop beautifully. Really inspiring thread!!
Oh yeah and the rams...holy yeah those are some beauties!

Well the plan is to break down the 75 and 45. So 115 for 125 .

 

Well the rummies are doing great. Never had them before and being a new untested tank and my last luck with tetras I wasn’t expecting much. But these guys seem pretty happy. 6 rummies in a 125 lol. Maybe this weekend I’ll test. Did add a sponge from another tank .

So hooking up the pump for the wet/dry I’ve run into a road block. The pump is a dc pump that can move 400-1000gph. But the outlet on it has a 1”thread. I’m trying to put that to a hose with a 5/8 inside diameter hose. Not easy!! Found at Home Depot a pex adapter that does fit but I’ve no clue if it will hold. What am I missing? Are there adapters. Should I have just got a AC pump. Here’s what it looks like coming off the pump.

 

Ok so the pump is up and running. Got it going at 80% so 800gph. Im thinking that’s good . I’ve also added 2 discus and will give them a few days than add I few more discus.

Well I moved 4 more discus into the tank. Not to good of a move. I had a Hans in with the Kenny’s discus for over a month as the hero fish and all went well. That Hans was one of the first into new tank. So yesterday I added 2 Kenny’s blue tigers and 2 Hans German wonder (I wonder who comes up with the names :rolleyes. All 4 look the same but the Kenny’s fish took a major setback. I’m guessing they didn’t like the transfer. One looks like below and the other is scratched up.

Hans fish came through looking there best yet

go figure! So now I’m going to hold off and see what happens with Kenny’s fish. The last 6 really are my favorites so I want to make sure all is good first.
Lost another rummie nose. Seems there getting sucked into the overflow. Guess I need something bigger.

 

Hopefully all it is "Stress" of being caught and moved.
Due to aggression and spawning, I transferred a couple of fish a few times from the main to another tank. They were very stressed of course, became very dark or very pale. Took a few days to a week for them to settle in.
One was so skittish it got a large gash on it's side, it healed up. Thankfully.
Now mixing of the different sourced fish is another issue and I have no clue.
Maybe coralbandit or RollaPear have some ideas.

If they don't clear up pretty quick I would move right to formulin for treatment .
One of my buddies who sells Asian and American koi says that is usually all that is needed ..
Hopefully they are looking better today .

Ok made the move. All Hans fish in 125. All dither fish in . Tough to catch SAE. Took about 1/2 hr with my wife helping. So all went good and everybody’s swimming around together. Kenny’s 2 are amazingly almost all cleaned up. So looking around admiring but my black ram is nowhere to be found. Check the overflow all over the floor move all the decorations around. Was about to give up and I spot his mouth wedged behind a planter that I had pushed all the way up to the side against the acrylic. Somehow it squeezed in there and got stuck. Got it out still alive but shocked. He’s hiding again but I can see him. Hopefully he’ll be better tomorrow. Only thing left is the Kenny’s red tigers. Will move them tomorrow and hope they move better than the blues.

Just want to keep things updated here . So last Friday in this tank I found eggs
now in my other tank I’ve found eggs many times. Once I found a wiggler. But that’s it. So I never expect much. Usually they’re eaten by the 3rd day.

But these guys made it through days 2 and 3 . Next came wigglers!!
day 2 still here!!
this is a active tank with discus and other fish. But nothing has eaten them. Next they started moving them.
with some advice I moved them to a 30g I was using to qt some rummie noses for the tank. Did the switch on day 5.
So after moving and on day 6 I found swimmers

So I’ve never done this before and really have no clue! Must say I’ve never even did any reading!! So utubed some last night and ordered some bbs eggs and will keep updating as its goes . Hoping for success but am completely amazed I’ve gotten this far!!

Well just coming back to this thread. A lot has happened. This tank has been moved into my 180. Right after this video I had a major cross contamination go through my tanks. Of the 12 discus 6 are still with me and are now in the 180. All dither fish but 4 rams are still with me. The rams aged out.

Yes at one point in the 180 I had 3 pairs laying eggs twice a month. But it’s calmed down and now the original 2 red tigers are the only one doing it now. But the eggs aren’t lasting like they did. Not that I’m try to breed them I’m not.

 

How did the cross contamination happen? Trying to avoid the sane, especially since we start moving next week, so everything tank-related will be a bit extra haywire.

 

Cross contamination is a big discus problem. It knocks people out of discus quite frequently. For me I bought 2 new discus locally at the 2” size. They had something with them that they were immune to. But it was strong! Cause there tank was in another room with all its own equipment. They never got sick. But even though I was careful it still passed from my hands into both of my main tanks. All 30of my discus were sick and turning black in the course of a week. Took 14 days of rid-ich and salt to cure them. And the use of heavy salt in one tank (7 tbs per 10g) gave most of those discus lasting problems. Most of them have passed within the next year. Only have 4 left from that tank and only 2 look good. The host 2 are still doing great and the other fish have built up an immunity to what they have.

Thank you. Those were before covid. It’s been tough lately finding tanks. But I’ve got enough now. Really! Really! Proof

On Long Island there is a lot of areas that people think all items are disposable. Take a ride around Jericho or Dix Hills and you will see what I mean great stuff on the curb sometimes new. Now when I lived in Huntington anything would go good or bad. One time we put out an old mattress and it started to rain hard so I thought hope the garbage guys pick it up. Nope somebody took it before they came. I would of taken those tanks in a second if I could lift them. Lol Not many tanks curb side here in MD.

 

Yeah I debated it all weekend. They were out in riverhead by my in-laws. But it wasn’t going to be just the one move. They would have been moved a few times.
