I had a betta that was nipping his fins, after being occupied and not "bored" he stopped, but he got fin rot because of the wounds... With my experience with bettas doing that, having a larger tank with more things for them to play with helps, like:

Floating colorful balls - they will play with these and attack them sometimes
Live foods - they will chase these around the tank and it gives them a snack
Fish - if the size tank/fish allows you to have fish I would defiantly see if you can't have some cories
Bubbles - my fish love to play in bubbles, bubble wands are the best for this
I hope Antares stops bitting his tail, he can really damage himself by doing that...

So while looking around at containers I found that amazon has a "critter keeper" that's only $10. It's a two gallon, but if you need to house a betta and don't have the budget to buy a big tank this could be another option. Good luck!

Would a cork work?

I have am empty 7.5, but it is a sterility container. Could I move him with something in there?

That's a cool idea

So, with most plastic bins on the underside of the lid or bin itself are arrows that form a triangle and a number inside. The number inside shows the plastic type and I'm pretty sure there is also abbreviations next to the triangle. The abbreviations are of the plastic type, so you can google the abbreviations to try to match them to the plastic type. This website shows what plastics and abbreviations belong to which plastic. https://www.northwestpolymers.ca/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=18 I'm not really sure what plastics are really safe for water storage, so you may need to look it up before you use the container.

I'm pretty sure a cork would do just fine, make sure to rinse it very good! Good luck!

Yeah I would.

Even if it had wine on it? (My parents had wine on New Years)

Yeah I would.

I believe if you soak it in warm water for a bit and then rinse it it should remove all traces of wine from it. I usually keep all my corkscrews for toys for pets (they roll- cats love things that rolls, most especially themselves).

you should if you have a dollar store around the decor or kids department and you should find plastic gems or balls that float

I would say get some malachite green for angelo but only dose half. and 1/4 dose of Methylene Blue. mix. it would help heal the fish and add extra oxygen to the water. for antares do 1/4 of each and more distractions toys and other things to keep him from biting. try giving him a plant or something to take the weight off his fins when he lays on it.

Thanks for the advice where would one get these medications?

lollipopkiller
  • #178
in a normal pet store under the name of nox-ich and most antI ich meds just read the back it should be like the only ingredient on most of them. it helps with adding oxygen to the water, antI fungus, ich, bacterial infections and external parasites.

Awwww, poor guys!

So while I was reading up on tail biting, no one really knows how to stop it and what it's caused by... It could be a number of factors that "could" cause it, like boredom, aggression, stress and genetics. Some people have success with moving the decorations around and moving the tank to a different place. I would move the tank to a place where you spend most of your time in or the most active room in the house. Sometimes floating toys and other toys will make them stop if it's boredom and live plants like lollipopkiller said can also help. This is something I just thought of, but having a higher current might make it more difficult to bite his fins. Adding peaceful fish might take his mind off of his tail, make sure they won't nip his tail for him and you do need a backup plan if he's overly aggressive. If it's caused by an aggressive build up, then reducing the light so he can't see his reflection might help. If it's stress, add more cover and places to hide. Another thing that I think can cause them to do this is if they think their tail is too heavy and are "trimming it", so it's not too heavy. Reducing the water level to around 6 - 8" may help with this, not really sure though... I would try every thing you can to stop his problem one at a time, so you know what you need to have the foster parents or the future owners do to keep him from doing this. Good luck and I hope this helps!

That did help are there any fish I could have with him in a 7.5 gallon? I saw him take a chink out of his analfin today I added a cork for him t investigate but that's not helping. He is in our kitchen right now and likes to stare at my mom doing the dishes. He doesn't have a filter, I am doing daily 50% WC. his bowl is about 6 inches high, if I go any less he will be in .5 gallons and I don't want to do that.

So, since it's a smaller tank I would do some shrimp. Try not to get ghost shrimp, they tend to "attack" the betta when they're sleeping. Snails like mystery snails will also be interesting to him as they do move around a lot, be careful that the betta isn't hurting the snails.

I was thinking did he start nipping his fins when you got him or was there damage before you had him?

He was missing fins before I got him, that's the reason I rescued him. I will try a snail, my RCS are still pretty small and I don't want to risk it.

So yeah. Went to buy plants and brought him home too... he was in the tank with the plants, and he looked so sad when she took them out. I couldn't even tell he was a betta except for the fact he took extreme interest at me when I was inspecting the plants. I didn't set up my 10 gallon but... now I guess I have my first inhabitant for it!! his plant is hanging out in the other tank in the mean time while I get everything set up for the 10 gallon. until then he'll be having a temporary home in my one gallon. I need a name though. I like Max.

Also can anyone link me to a good source to the different tail types and color variations of bettas? I want to know what my types are for my boys!!!

lollipopkiller I almost want to say he's red, but on the pink end of red right now. I have him in the 10 gallon now that it's all set up and treated and stuff. I put him in with the plant that I bought him with, and the other plant is now in the 5 gallon with Smaug. I'm working on a name right now. Since I keep choosing things out of books, I'm going to go with this one too. I'm thinking Zeddicus (out of a favorite series.)

Here are some better pictures of him in the 10 gallon now. He's settling in happily and those little rock caves? Yeah he's LOVING swimming in and out of them.

From what I'm reading I think so. Honestly I never realized how many types of tails and color variations there are!! I'm shellshocked! He's so small though compared to my other boys. I think he's a young one. Pierre's over twice his size.

Wendigoblue
  • #196
I would think he's a cambodian also. They have a "fleshy" body color with red fins, I've read some can have blue or green fins (not sure if they're still considered cambodian though). Very pretty color! I love the "fleshy" colored ones with the white and red butterfly tail! Zeddicus is an awesome name for him too!

He looks like a cambodian to me too, echi1, the ones with blue and green on their fins are also considered cambodians.
