Starting a "Betta Rescue"

There's lots of options for donations. You can make up a website (if you ever need help with that I have some experience building websites) and accept paypal donations.

https://www.crowdfunding.com/

here's a good start to checking out some sites!!! Research thoroughly of course, before doing anything. Like I said, if you ever want to build a website for it, I'd be more than happy to help out!!! Also, talk to your LFS, and local animal shelter. They might be able to point you in directions or even help you out (like mine is helping me!)

Ok,thanks Daleeria. I am planning on starting a website once I get some more rescues. I will definitely talk to the local animal shelter soon. Thanks for the link. I will ask my mom and dad about the gofundme site.

Update on feather- he is doing really well. He loves his "forest" and rests in the guppy grass a lot. No new bubble nests. I am considering adding some of my RCS in with him. Thoughts?

I might add some bamboo to his tank too.

I am going to ask the local feed store and vet if I can put a donation jar on the counter as well as the local animal shelter. Any other ideas?

My friends little brothers school has a betta that is over fed and has finrot. I might try to see if I can help the little guy.

I really hope you can. OR! another good idea would be seeing if you can go in and teach them how to properly care for a betta?? just a thought.

I never thought about the donation jar idea.

That's a good idea Daleeria. I will get the teachers email and email her about it. It might be hard though.

It was my moms idea actually.

What do you think about adding bamboo and some RCS?

Actually part of the reason I mention it is one of my coworkers, a waitress, also teaches at one of the local elementaries. She does special education and helps with speech and cognitive disorders and I was telling her about the betta rescue idea, and she loved it. Suggested maybe as a side project I bring one of the bettas I get in, and show some of her students how to raise him. A bit of visual therapy, and they learn the skills of feeding and caring for something, especially since bettas are so interactive.

Hmm I think adding that would be awesome actually. Today is game day. Pierre's being temporarily moved from his tank so I can get some new substrate in there and add a few plants and ghost shrimp. EXCITING!!!

guppybreeder If you haven't already gotten the background yet, a blue ocean look would be neat! Like this:

I have bamboo in one of my tank and petco sells an asian gazebo that I also have in the bamboo tank. It would look great with the elephant you have! I love the gazebo, but after a year the paint has faded, it's around a 1" fade. Still looks neat and my BN loves it! The shrimp sound neat too!

I love the idea of teaching people about bettas and their care! If you have lots of kids attending, printing out some betta coloring pictures and that should keep them pretty occupied, while the parents listen in. Bringing some of your bettas to show would be neat, but making sure they look their best and not stressed would be hard! If you can get people to adopt your bettas, maybe you can hand out free plant clippings along with the betta to get their new home started?
Good luck with the rescue!

I have noticed that my local Petsmart lets a animal shelter sit in or outside the store trying to get donations.

I hate how schools do this. They keep a small bowl with no lid and toddlers can put stuff inside it and they wonder why it dies

echi1, I was going to use light blue wrapping paper and glue some "clouds" to it. That's a really cool gazebo! That is an AWESOME idea! I will try to plan a meeting like you said. Maybe I could raffle off an aquarium and have monthly meetings. Daleeria, you should do it F1shy, I doubt mine would let meme too.

Do you have a local fish club in your area? Maybe you can ask if you can host a betta care meeting for the public and members of the club? It would mean you could get more activity and the clubs will probably let you use the space too. Or maybe they will let you rent it for a few hours. Making a website, will probably up your activity with the rescue too!

I'm glad they got that betta a new and bigger home! Good luck!

@, That sounds awesome! Let us know how it goes! Good luck!

Actually I found a local group that holds different little educational seminars in the schools in our state on caring of pets- including fish. They have three small groups that work together, each cover a different subject - one group covers mammals, with one person doing cat, one doing dog, one doing rodents etc, one group covers exotic pets and why they're a bad idea, and one group covers all the miscellaneous things that crop up- Reptiles, fish, etc.

I never realized that was a real thing until I was looking for resources to maybe help me educate the kids I'm going to be taking a betta to (we're actually starting a trial run of it next week. Monday morning I'm taking Pierre in to show and educate them how to care for a fish. We've gotten some cute little worksheets up and stuff as well. He's going to hang out there for the week (since his tank is established and everything, we figured it would be more stable than setting up a new tank) especially since at this point I don't have any rescue fish to give them yet. We're just doing to see how they react to him, and how responsible they're WILLING to be. Friday Pierre will come back home and from there we'll make our final decision on if we want to proceed with the project. Reminds me I have to work on permission forms for the kids today...

so YAY GOING FORWARD WITH FUN PROJECTS!!!

Not only that but apparently the do it for adults too. When our animal shelter adopts a pet out they give a packet on 'how to care for your pet', which I remember because I've adopted kitties from them (I know, I'm a cat lady and a fish lady, not exactly a safe combo). Well this group is the one that actually writes and prints them out for the shelter!!! They also help out with dog training and stuff!

I'm a cat person too. I have 3 9 month old kitties.
I am going to the local animal rescue tomorrow to talk to them.

You have to be very careful with cats and fish tanks, they're sneaky...

I have seen packets at petsmart on the animal care and usually the fish ones aren't the best, but some of the animal ones are okay. I would rather research myself than rely on the LPS to tell me how to care for an animal. Plus normally they don't tell you the bad about an animal, like about the venom amount or toxicity of the bite or sting of a tarantula or scorpion. I really wish they would discuss stuff like that with their clients and even the behavior of the animal would be good also...
guppybreeder, Having people foster your bettas is an awesome idea! They would be able to experience taking care of a betta and will learn how to take care of one properly!

Good luck to you all!

@
My cats are barn cats, so they don't come near my fishtanks. They live in the tack room at night though.

Yeah, It says bettas can live in .5 gallons and do better in smaller tanks

That's what I was thinking

I am making a powerpoint on bettas and their care to present at the first meeting. Its 18 pages long and I am nowhere near done...I have some money so I am going to try to rescue some fish tomorrow.

I would totaly foster some bettas for you and may adopt one. I'm working on a custom 100 gallon betta sanctuary idea along with a few other tanks.

Congrats on the new rescues! I hope they feel better!

How about Sirius for the red one, after the star. I'm pretty sure Sirius is one of the brightest stars in the sky, it's beautiful to look at (it's constellation is Canis Major). The reason I think he should have that name is, because they are like dogs when it comes to their attitude to people and lots of people compare them to dogs!
You could also call him Beetlejuice after the red star that is in the constellation Orion. Beetlejuice is a red star and well the betta is red!
Or Antares after the red star that marks the heart of the constellation Scorpius! Bettas have a huge heart and Antares is the "heart of the scorpion".
Sorry for all the star names! I just love the stars' names!

For the blue one... I really can't think of anything for him, sorry! All of the other posts had very nice names for him! Good luck!
