Stand Vs. Table

I’m just getting back into the hobby and deciding where the aquarium should go in my apartment, probably 20 gallon size. I’ve not been impressed with the stands I’ve seen so far in the pet stores and was considering using a 24x48” folding table I have for the time being. I’ve noticed most commercial stands are the size of the aquarium, I assume to distribute the weight evenly on the outside of the stand. Is using a table where the aquarium would sit in the middle to be avoided? The top is made of some sort of composite wood 5/8” thick with a plastic(?) faux wood grain veneer with a metal frame and four legs. Seems sturdy enough but I’m no expert and want to avoid making a mistake. Thanks for your help!

I would not use a folding table, as it may not be able to support the weight (a 20 gallon with just water weighs over 160 pounds full).

Thick, sturdy legs mounted beneath, not on the sides, of the tabletop would be safer.

I have a 29 gallon on a 4-cube shelf. While the packaging says the weight limit is 128 lbs, the shelf's panels are over 1.5" thick, with center bracing; I am 240 pounds and have stood and jumped on the shelf without issues. After a year there has been no sagging or damage at all. As long as the material is thick and sturdy and constructed to handle weight, it should work.

I agree no folding table ;( I use mine from Costco for rats.

You could make one in a few hours or like stated above find something sturdy and flat, preferably real wood.

I may just say if you can sit and move on the table its good for a small tank, But tables aren't made for lots of weight over many days. Stands are built to have the weight

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll dump the folding table idea and look further!

Check goodwills. They always have stands, if you have one in your area. Also check your local private aquarium shops.

You could also get a metal shelving unit from a hardware store. They often have shelves rated 400+ lbs each.

Thanks for your suggestions. We actually have a big chain hardware superstore in Manhattan which I'll check for shelving.
