Hi all!
I was wondering how you prevent there from being stagnant water in a Walstad Method setup? Thanks!

Airstone or if you don’t like the noise or don’t have a nearby air pump you can buy mini powerheads for about $7 shipped on ebay that work great for this, I have one in most of my setups.

53-1450GPH Adjustable Submersible Water Pump Aquarium Pond Powerhead Hydroponic | eBay

I have the 53 GPH in my 3 Gallon Walstad Bowl, with flow adjusted to all the way low. It’s a bit of a very high flow for the first week or so, but after that it sort of settled down to a more manageable 10ish GPH where I can still turn up the flow if I want.

Is there any way to do this without a pump? Floating plants? Me going in and moving the water around daily?

I have 4 Walstad bowls total and 1 doesn’t have any circulation and it’s probably thriving the most out of all of them. Granted, I only have shrimp in that bowl and I think the pump helps them stabilize faster. But a pump isn’t 100% necessary.

Haha, really all the pump does is gets the water flowing so the nutrients get distributed to the plants equally so promote better nitrogen uptake and better growth across the board. But that being said, fish and shrimp move around too, so they can play a role in this distribution in stagnant water, hence why a pump isn’t 100% necessary… I added mine because a mosquito decided to have its larve in my fishless bowl and with no stagnant water to deter them and no fish to eat the larve the option was either add fish or a pump, so after letting one of my endlers loose to clean up the larve I just added pumps in a few of the ones I didn’t feel like adding insect eating fish to.

No… the shrimp are scavenger types so if the larve were to die they might eat them, but when alive the shrimp won’t bother them at all

Ok. Are pumps and fish the only way to stop mosquitos?

If I stirred the water daily, would that lower the risk of mosquito eggs?

No. Once you stop they would just float back to the surface.
