I have a pregnant platy and I just saw yesterday her belly turned square shaped. I know that is a sign of them about to give birth but does anyone know a time frame from when they look square to giving birth? I don’t need exact I just want to know estimated how long she will have to be separated

Doesn't even have to be seperated. But usually i find once they square off, usually within a week or so babies start appearing.

Why not seperate her? I would like to sell the babies. I also have goldfish with the platies in the main tank and they will eat them.

You can. Just saying not required, but if you have a plan for them, seperate away.

Well, with my platies and mollies judging of how square she is right now from the photo i would give her 1-2 weeks but could be less, with my orange platy female she didn't give birth until 2-3months into her pregnancy and just recently a few days ago started giving birth this was because of stress so if you notice her being stressed alot by the other fish she might take longer than usual so I'd seperate her if you think she's getting too stressed and that may or may not speed the process up, I'm not an expert when it comes to fish but stress can either make her give birth too early or just slow it down, if you want to sell her fry i would wait a week and see if she becomes much more squared, I'll show a photo of my orange platy, its a bad photo but its like the only i have of her being squared up quite alot for a better example, once she is that squared i would honestly say that she would give birth in 1-2 days or on that particular day even, and thats when i would seperate her, if you have a 10-20g i would put her in there once she looks like this

Thank you so much! I don’t know what’s going on with her or how long it will take but nobody wants to buy platies. So I guess whenever she gives birth I might keep one to Have but sadly, they are not wanted

I still think that she's got still some time to go. If you just don't want fry, best to keep a male instead.

I agree with emeraldKing 100% usually when they get very squared in a short amount of time like overnight i find that they give birth on that day, looking at the photo (shes absolutely gorgeous btw) i agree with emeraldKing that she does have some time ahead, my guess would be atleast 4 weeks but at minimum 3, so i would not panick too much, after 2 weeks i would seperate her if you plan on selling or keeping them but until then i would say sit back and relax of course if you see alot of stress thats becoming too much for her i would seperate her as soon as possible so if you don't have a tank set up or have one but does not have water or not cycled i would make sure its cycled straight away just in case

Thank you! Nobody wants to buy platies (they are too common) and she gave birth unexpectedly and only one survived
