I was wondering how big of a tank I should have for just for a spotted puffer and wanted to know a little more about what it really meant to have a brackish tank and the extra requirement it needed thanks in advance

I'm guessing we are talking about a "green spotted puffer" (GSP) and GSPs grow to 6" long and the same in girth. They also require different salinity throughout their life span and require full marine conditions as adults. They require a very specific diet and live as long as a dog or cat. IMO a GSP deserves no less than a 55g.

Please, if you are reading the minimum requirements as posted at "Wally-World", a box pet-mart, or even the ill-informed local fish store; Please do hours upon hours of research online. Fishlore and ThePufferForum is a great place of research and great advice.

Puffers are great fish and I hope you decide to get one...As well as do what is absolute best for that new friend.

HTH and good luck.

JRC3 is spot on, a friend of mine is a die hard fan of spotted puffers and has been keeping them since the last 14 years (my hobby mate )
He had an extremely tough time in the early days to keep them alive/happy/long life etc, research research research is what helped him.

I don't personally have experience with them (too much of a hassle IMO) but here's my two cents from what i've learned from him:

Needs minimum of 35-40 Gallons:
Stage 1: Juvenile, likes to live in freshwater with extremely low dosage of salt to the tank water.
Stage 2: Teen , like to have a brackish environment.
Stage 3: Adult, Saltwater setup.

I keep Figure 8 puffers. I recommend no less than 20 gallon for a singleton.

This author is regarded as the God of figure 8 puffer care. He's had them live for 15 years and as long as 18. It's well worth reading several times.

*edit*
He has since added that F8s do best at 1.005 SG. That's what I shoot for.
