I was wondering if anyone knew this queston. We got #2 spotted puffer fish....I have NEVER seen them
puff up, I guess they don't feel threatened by the other fish, but my question is...sometimes their
bellly's seem to be ALL white...and sometimes they are almost all grey..they seem to be really healthy.
Can anyone tell me WHY that is???

Thanks in advance!

My spotted puffers do the same- their bellies are white when they are active and playing/eating, and when they are resting they turn pretty brown all over, especially the belly. I think it is their way of camouflage. I completely love mine, but soon I fear I will have to let them go back to a store. I got 3 at walmart, when they were looking really bad- tails nipped off, and with ick. I have them in a 10 gallon and now they are in great health. But, as they grow I would need a far larger tank, so I am facing having to give them to the good fish store in town to find them healthy homes. They have so much personality, they just are supposed to get really aggressive and need a lot of room when they are older :-(

Ya know, it's funny that you bring this up...My husband & I were at Walmart just while ago...they had a BUNCH
of spotted puffers.....only about 3 looked healthy...I felt SO SORRY FOR THEM!!!
Don't EVER buy fish at Walmart...they NEVER take care of their fish....3 out of 4 will be unhealthy and or have ick!
Thanks for telling me about the changing color, I told my husband about them changing colors, he thought I was crazy...and I knew what I saw!!! Your right....when they are very active, the belly's are all white!!!!!

the main reason for these fish being so unhealthy is they are kept in totally the wrong conditions. this does not only apply to walmart. it applies to a majority of fish stores. the amount of people trying to keep these fish in freshwater and wondering why they are never healthy looking is unbelievable.

I have had friends in the past who have bought these as freshwater puffers and they have been fine for a few months then suddenly take drastic decline in health for no apparent reason. Sadly when I very first started keeping puffers I done the same but never again.
