I am looking for some guidance from my friends here. I believe the last time I had a sponge filter was back in the early 70's. I am planing to take down our 10 gallon QY but want to have filtration ready if needed. So I was thinking of a sponge behind a large piece of drift wood that has an air stone behind it now.

I know technology marches on. So what would be a good tallish sponge that would fit in this spot and in a 10 gallon when needed?

Most sponges are cylinder shaped. Unless they are corner cut. They are smaller than you might think. The generic ones are perfectly fit for purpose.

You can always use adapters as well. If you require a smaller or larger hole, my favorite Aquarium Co-Op has sponge filter “kits”, as well as cylinder shaped sponges available.
