Is sponge filter filtration, all we need is a air pump? nothing else and no media compared to hang on the back or built in filtration? can someone explain. I'm a little confused. thanks.

All you need to set up a sponge filter is the sponge filter itself, airline tubing, a check valve and an air pump.
Sponge filter- The item that does the filtering.
Airline tubing- Transports the air from the air pump to the sponge filter.
Check valve- Prevents the water from back siphoning into the air pump and damaging it.
Air pump- The machine that pumps air to power the sponge filter.

You don't need to add media for a sponge filter as the sponge material on the filter is the media.

Thank you so much! Now I understand it much more clearly.

I've finally set these up for my bettas in their tank. How do you "clean" it? Light swish in tank water? Squeeze?

We just ordered one for my husbands tank - I had a hard time understanding how it works because I kept thinking - that's it??? I'm looking forward to seeing how it works compared to my HOB on my fish tank.

use the biggest air pump you can afford, you can always regulate the flow but you can't increase if the flow is not good enough, I also use the Aquael minI power head on my double sponge filters and they work out at a fraction of the price than air pumps and more powerful, i'v attached a photo

Sponge filters work well.

Most breeders and people with "fish rooms" with multiple tanks use them because they work so well.

I have them in my tanks as secondary filtration, though my next tank may be primarily filtered with them.
