Sponge filter for fiddler crabs?

So I have a 10 gal with 4 fiddler crabs 1 male and 3 females (don’t know if that’s overstocked or not) and right now I have a cheap turtle filter made by tetra (not saying anything bad about the brand) but I was wondering if I could do a sponge filter? I have a tight fitting lid or would the crabs be “dumb enough” to eat the sponge or something lol.

I say you can only try it, no doubt they have to deal with more than a sponge in the wild, if anything they may pick on food collected on the sponge, just watch while its seeding to see how it goes

Ok I decided to go with one of those clear plastic filters run by air that you put your own media in
