Split Tank For Pea Puffer?

I was thinking of putting a divider in my 15g, so I can have a pea puffer. What are the minimum dimensions for one? The tank is a 12 by 12 by 24

I've seen some pea puffers at the petstores get pretty decent sized, bigger than extra large golf balls, though maybe they weren't pea puffers either? I would recommended something a bit bigger than a 15 gallon if you want to split it, just how I would do it.

Contradictory to my comment, I did find something saying that a near minimum size should be 15 inches in length for a single puffer. Hope that gives you a little idea. Though I have found bookshelf tanks that are 12 or 15 gallon with a well over 20in footprint.

What is on the other side of the divider?
Pea puffers need a 12" long area

Pea puffers get to an inch long and are fine in a 5 gallon

Why not make each tank a 12 inch cube and call it a day?

Two bettas(trying to rehouse one), two guppies, and a vampire shrimp. In the future I am thinking of adding three endlers and three more guppies. Unless that keeps me from Mr pea puffer

So you’re saying to just put the divider right in the middle of the tank?

Here is another post I found on this site specifically about puffers.
5 Gallon Tank - Dwarf Puffers Myths And Facts

I know my first comment probably sounded really stupid, saltwater fish and puffers aren't my specialty and neither is knowing a species without looking at the tank name unless it's a bottom feeder.
I do apologize for the many shops near me putting misleading labels on the tanks. Though I probably should have looked it up before anyway.

I've checked many resources, and to be fair, almost the only place where I consistently see people saying 5 or 10 gallons is okay, is on fishlore.
People on other sites and some people at fish stores even have their puffers in larger display tanks than you are being recommended to use.
While I'm not saying they are wrong and you should go bigger, as mentioned in other posts, smaller is harder to clean, and more stressful on the fish when it comes to cleaning if you don't remove them.

Quite a few references said there should be at least 15 inches of swim space across the tank if not more. Especially if you think you may plan for a pair rather than a single.

I also happened to call my local lfs, it's a family run business that has been around for more than 40 years, and they refuse to agree that a small tank is good enough for a pea, he even recommended I not house it in my decent sized 10 gallon where as others have been saying 5 gallon is okay.
It all comes down to fish activities.
Is your fish going to be swimming back and forth for excersize? Or is there enough room to explore that it doesn't have to go back and forth?

That's the one reason I chose a long tank over a tall or standard. So my fish appear to have more swim room, this stops them from getting bored and just floating, or harassing the other fish, or hurting themselves.
(Had issues with lonely fish ramming the tank when bored due to space)

Hopefully this post helps a bit more, research research reasearch! And if you have a local shop with info you trust, try giving them a call and asking what they think.
This came from a guy with multiple 600 gallon tanks in his store and all sorts of salt and fresh fish and corals.

I want it to take up the absolute minimum amount of space in my tank. Since 5 g is the min. Can I do only a third of the tank. 12 inches wide 12 inches tall and 8 inches long?

You know most of us think more room is always better. 8” just sounds more like a cell than a home. Don’t you think?

Truthfully, I don’t like even numbers. 9? They’re just too cute!
