I had 4 nerites until recently then iadded what I thought was 5 more young nerite snails I'd got at an auction
It has come to light they're spixi snails
My nerites have completely disappeared and my tank isn't as clean is it was
I e looked around for empty shells
    Any ideas?

Spixi are apple snails and should live happily together but if the water is getting contaminated your nerites may have escaped looking for cleaner water but the chances are they are tucked up under the lid somewhere, it's not uncommon for them to totally disappear for a few weeks mine do

Nerites as big as they are are masters at hiding as for your algae 4 nerits are ample but those spixi will breed like crazy

This is what one nerite done overnight

As colorful as their shells can be they are true masters at hiding as above mentioned. I have 5-6 in my 55 and don't think i've seen em all at the same time. :) Also don't rule them gone if you do find an escapee on the back of your stand or floor as they can bounce back when found out of the water. Ask me how i know ;)

I lost one out of my 5.5 cory fry tank after finding him behind the tank on the counter although i did add him back to the tank but he may have been out too long. I found one on the back of my 8.8 Betta tank stand and added him back and he was back to cleaning surfaces within 1/2 hour. His shell was bone dry so not exactly sure how long he was out . Also heard what sounded like a marble hit my floor while i was checking out my tanks and to my ( not so ) surprise it was yet another nerite from my 10 that decided he wanted to take a snail walk towards my 55 so seeing he was heading that way i decided to put him into the big house :)
