This is a very dangerous piece of legislation.

Very worrying.

However top social networks, search engines and sites that are opponents of this have shut down and millions of reps are being called and emailed. I'm hoping these won't pass.

yikes. uncool. I believe trying to restrict the flow of information on the internet may lead to some very drastic retaliations from those who are technologically equipped to do so. this could get ugly.

second thought: is FL in danger of this? If one of us passes on information from a fish book that's protected, and cites it incorrectly, does that mean we're toast, or do we get a chance to fix it? If this legislation does indeed pass, is there anything we as fishlorians can do to protect our site from shut down by some paranoid publishing company?

Not only is the bill a bad idea, enforcing it would be a nightmare.

That's my thought, as well. How they heck are they going to enforce something like this? Seems near impossible, honestly...

Also, MysteryGuitarMan says it best ;D

Very excellent video!

Gets right to the point.

Has anyone signed to stop the bill? I have. The planted tank went black w/ a link to petition. I know fishlore dosent get into politics, but maybe it could make an exception.

I've signed a few petitions, yes. I have to figure out what my log-in for the White House web site is before I do anything else. That really the most important one...

I'm all for protecting copyrighted material, but that's not what these laws are about. They're either about censorship or about giving the big media corporations a better hold over their industries. Probably a bit of both.

Technically, and at its most basic level, no. This legislature is only aimed at overseas sites...
...
But...
There are a number of countries that are looking to the U.S. as laying the framework for this kind of thing. If SOPA passes, then the U.K. may pass a similar law. Then, let's say someone posts a passage from Harry Potter, and Rowling dislikes this. She files a complaint, and all U.K. ISPs block Fishlore. Suddenly, nobody in the U.K. can get on Fishlore.

Before the page of your article loads, press AND hold the ESC Key until it loads. You won't get the blackout error !
Thanks 9GAG!
PS. I totally understand if this is unappealing and one of the mods take it down, I just found it useful and it helped me with my essay

I have signed the petition, and also contacted my Congresspeople back when I first heard about this (geeknet has been in an uproar about this for awhile). I encourage everyone else to do the same. Petitions are great, but personal words to the people who represent you can better influence individual votes.

I'm not going to pull it down. However, I ask that anyone who does this first reads the information that Wikipedia is putting up on the subject.

People need to start boycotting the companies that push this stuff.

I was emailed an interesting video from signing a petition (sorry, I don't remember where I found it! I've signed a few today), and it goes a bit more in-depth, and has a bit of cause-and-effect stuff. Its better for 'visual learners', or people who can't read off a screen. It told me to share it, so here I am LOL

That's a great video Akari, thanks for linking it. Also, I added the link on top of the forum to google's landing page about SOPA and PIPA. If you want to sign the petition you can use that link up top too.

Great Video!

So, according to that video, if I were to paste something copyrighted, like a music video, song, or lyrics to a song, all of FL could get shut down, correct? If so, how will FL go about this?

That is a potential result if other countries make similar laws, yes. The legislation in the U.S. shouldn't directly affect Fishlore, but, like I said before, other countries are kind of looking to us to set the baseline here.

I read about the proposed enforcement as I own a small ISP. And what a nightmare!!! I would be responsible for maintaining a federally sanctioned blacklist. And could lose my company if I accidentally missed one.

Just glad it didn't pass. No ISP would survive for long.

No, just what makes the internet the 'internet.'

Sharing links, and other copyrighted materials.

From what I know, its because the larger corporations are "losing" money from all the piracy and going on. Since you can get almost anything online for free, fewer people will buy the real thing. Also, megaupload and megavideo have been shut down from my knowledge. 5 of the people from these sites were sent to jail for all the copyright infringed stuff they post for free. Sigh, the government is trying to control this country. But I doubt the bill will pass though.

Because the big corperations ( who also control the government ) haven't figured out a way to charge you......yet !!!

Well, if it does pass, I suppose I'll have to invest in one of those handy IP-relocator things. Does the government have a plan for that? I mean, wouldn't everybody just go get one? Maybe this is just a ploy to get us to buy them. They don't really think there's no way around things like that, do they? Because that level of technological ignorance in a government might be even scarier than what they're trying to do...

If this passes, they will prob'ly become illegal.
