So, I'm going with a peacock tank on my 90 gallon in a few weeks. I now have 2-aceI 1-yellow lab 1- hybrid (mduna I think) and 5-clown loaches. I'm thinking of perhaps 10 peacocks including a dragon blood that my son loves and ? , that's what I need help with. Looking for a peaceful tank so what do you cichlid guys think? Thanking you in advance.

A peaceful tank and African rift lake cichlids don't usually go together haha. From what I understand, you don't want to mix peacocks with others. I'm not even close to knowledgeable on rift lake stocking (calling Anders247), but I would go with just peacocks.

By the way, do you have a plan for the clown loaches? They'll grow too large for your tank.

Yes they will. I'm going to re-home them when the time comes.

Not sure what that means, but why not rehome them now and get something like a smaller pleco, that you can keep its entire life?

I'm more concerned about the peacocks now.

Peacocks you don't have yet? With your current occupants, I wouldn't add peacocks. Mbuna and peacocks don't play nice, from what I've read.

I'm pretty sure the ones I currently have should be ok. If not, I can deal with it with my lfs.

I don't know what makes yours different from the others, but best of luck.

If your looking for a peacefull cichlid tank stick with just peacocks most mbuna are to aggressive for peacocks ,the yellow lab would be fine with peacocks I wouldnt put a hybrid in with them and the aceis are a mixed bag depends on the fish .but 13 african cichlids in a 90 gallon is heavily stocked you better have very good filtration and a lot of sight breaks .the dragon blood peacocks are pretty aggressive for a peacock ,put toghether a list of peacocks your considering and we can help you with stocking ,rehome the loaches they prefer softer water than africans do.

Let's say I put them in another tank. Now I can do an all peacock tank. What suggestions ?

Thanks Geno. Looking at sunshine peacock, strawberry peacock, Eureka red peacock, blue regal . I was unsure about how many I could house. 10 would be nice but I will probably do 5 or so.

In a 90 gallon I would shoot for 12 fish max that stay at 6 inches ,are you planning on an all male tank or male and female ,this will change your stocking plans and group sizes ,

All the peacocks youve listed will work fine toghether ,the red empress is a hap not a peacock ,it will grow larger and slightly more aggressive than peacocks ,I have kept one with peacocks without much problem though ,I suggest you find a good lfs to purchase from as you will run into some peacocks that are very aggressive and you may have to do some rehomeing until you find just the right mix ,obviously this is not possible with online purchaseing .

Geno I almost forgot, what are your thoughts on red shoulder peacocks? Will they go well with the others?

Geno

Yes theyll do great with the others just try not to get to many with the same color pattern as they tend to be more aggressive to each other.

sounds like a pretty tank. A 90 gallon is a good size African tank, If you stick with peacock and some of the mellower mbuna and smaller haps you can put 15 to 25 fish in the tank. Zebras are mellow and come in lots of colors, electric blues are a good choice strawberry peacock, Eureka red peacock, red shoulder peacock, dragon blood are all a good. The clown loaches can hold there own, but they're diet would not be good for the Africans and vice versa.

Well I picked up all the ones I wanted except the sunshine plus they gave me an red fin borlyeI and a otter point.
The loaches are in my other tank now and I picked up a bushy nose pleco.
I'm thinking of a blue regal, red shoulder and I still want the sunshine. I'm thinking maybe just a couple more after that.

My stock now

Red empress
BI color
Red fin borleyi
Strawberry dragon blood
Eureka red
Lemon Jake
Otter point peacock

Re-homed the yellow lab, aceI and the hybrid.

I'm already planning for the 125. I have a wet dry filter with a ehein 1260 and a sun sun 304B canister filter.
All the fish I have are about 3" except the strawberry, he's 4". All are starting to color up. Waiting for the color to show is harder than I expected.

Yeah I bought all mine as juveniles no color and fed them up to bring out the colors that for me was the best part watching them change each month.

I think it's better for the wallet that way. I was just looking at the lemon Jake and the bicolors dorsal fin and it's not as sharp as the other ones, but it does have some color. Now wondering if I have females.

Sunshine ,ob ,z.rock even though its a lithobate will do great with peacocks mine was pretty mellow.I would go with the red top lwanda gorgeous fish but completely your choice .I always had a lot of trouble with the ruby red had to rehome 7 of them before I found one that would play nice with all the others .they seem to be a bit more aggressive for some reason .I had to get a juvenile much smaller than the others to make it work though you may have different luck than I did .sounds like a beautiful bunch your putting toghether ,cant wait to see the finished product.

I forgot to mention I did get a cuckoo catfish. In your opinion do you think 5 more fish is too much? I have 11 now and want to add 5 more. All will be about 6" fully grown.

Well they are all getting along except for the red shoulder. Had to isolate him. He was chasing everyone. The sunshine has minor damage to his right eye but it's getting better. I went with the red top lwanda after researching how albinos typically get beat up quite a bit. So far so good. Tank is starting to look full. Juveniles are starting to get blue specs on their gills. Can't wait till they are fully colored up already.

Syndontis cats are nice you should really keep them in groups they seem to do better.you will love the redtop lwanda there beautiful fish .yes its pretty normal to rehome peacocks and haps .sometimes you get lucky and get a strong dominant male who keeps the peace in the tank and isn't to much of a jerk but there's always going to be skirmishes with african cichlids .
