Something This Newbie Learned

Short version: when trying the cycle your new tank using ammonia, get a new bottle of it.

I spent a week trying to get ammonia readings, without any success. I tried more and more drops of ammonia. I measured out a quarter cup of the stuff. No ammonia reading. I even tested my test kit by adding a drop of ammonia to a tube of water. (Got a reading with that.) Then I thought about how old my bottle of ammonia was. Maybe 10 years...

So, I bought a new bottle of ammonia and ta-da! I got a reading of 2ppm. Finally!
First steps toward getting my new tank ready.
