55 Gallon Tank Soapy Water And Glass Polisher In Aquariums?

Hello Everybody,

Ive got some questions...

On Sunday I resealed a 55-gal aquarium with my brother, rather than using tape and peeling it off he wanted to do it the way he does it as a civil engineer, soapy water and smooth with his fingers (the soap used was Morning Fresh). It worked out okay as for looks I'll be doing a water test tomorrow after 96 hours/4 days. Now I'm wondering whether I can just give it a good wash and water test to remove the soap residue in the tank and then be fish safe.

Also, he wants to use his glass polisher as this tank is 2nd hand and there is a large scratch down the middle due to a divider being inserted by the previous owner. If we use a glass polisher and give it a good wash and water test will it be aquarium safe or will chemicals from soap and glass cleaner still be present?? I want this to work and be fish safe. Also, I don't know what the glass polisher is made from he has the stuff not me so....

Please let me know if it should be fine with a good rinse or if it will not be safe.

Thanks in advanced,
Peter :)

White vinegar can be used as part of your clean up .
White vinegar and sunshine are often used and recommended by many people on the internet. I have personally used white vinegar on second hand tanks.

Let the tank silicone harden for a week if you possibly can wait that long before you move the tank and or start washing etc.

I don’t know what chemicals are in the polish but would not risk it myself just for looks.

Hi Flyfisha,

I used white vinegar to clean and sanitize every surface of the tank. Im now up to the final tests and cleans before water testing and moving inside for a display tank. I has a pretty ugly straight scratch from top to bottom down the middle not very deep but is noticeable. I want to get rid of it. So if I just rinse the soapy water residue should go but it may not be very wise to use the glass polisher?
i forgot to say, i was planning to leave the tank too cure for 7 days+ but its dry and after 4 days (Sun-Thur) I think ill do a water test because from Fri-Mon I'm away and i'd like to have the tank water tested clean and setup by the end of school holidays(after first week of October).

Can you put the scratched side to the back and then hide the scratch with plants, hardscape, background?

White vinegar works like a charm with a good rinse or 2 after.

Also dawn, the regular formula, works great with a good rinse.

We use Sunlight on outside glass, leaves a decent protective film.

*Edit The scratch should not be noticeable with water in the tank. But if its deep and wide enough it may be. Use a dark background, some tall and bushy plants like Limnophila or Rotala
