So i know it can’t happen, but what if ….nerite babies?

so i have a 29 gallon freshwater setup. it has been up and running for about 7/8 months and stocked with mollies, corys, 1 nerite 2 rabbit snails and we have lost 2 mystery snails since open. tank was set up with plants and ran for 5 weeks before the residents were introduced. they all came at the same time. the first days we lost 2 molly’s and 1 cory. everyone else adjusted nicely. after about 3 months, 1 mystery died. soon after i had nerite eggs everywhere. i saw they could not hatch. i didn’t immediately remove. fast forward a few weeks and i had baby snails crawling everywhere. around this time my last mystery snail decided to leave us as well. now i have around 3 dozen baby snails, not including those lost to the filter, that shouldn’t exist not to mention some of the patterns are unusual….

so at this point the only thing that logically makes sense, is the nerite and mystery’s had babies and somehow that allowed those nerite snails to hatch… as hard as that is to believe. is there any other information i have missed to explain what is happening?

Those are bladder snails - a different species to what you have in the tank already. Sorry to break it to you!

If you have live plants you could have pest snails that have started appearing. I don't think it's possible for snails to interbreed, and nerites need brackish water to reproduce.

so is the one with the spirals a bladder snail?

the plants were in the tank since day one and had 5 weeks prior to fish and snails being added. nothing new was introduced after initial setup. the aquarium was setup august 2021 and the snail eggs started november/december 2021 with the babies moving around december/january. that would have been 4 months after everything was introduced, is that possible?

The little snails are the bladder snails. The big snail is the nerite.
Not sure which one you mean by the one with the spirals, but hopefully that should answer your question:)

the big one is spirals

so can those be dormant for 4 months before being noticed?

It depends. If you added new plants recently they may have hitched in on those. But, those snails are adults, and they (I think, I don't have bladder snails, but I do have ramshorns) are tiny when they are babies. It could have taken four months for them to reach that size.

that makes sense if it would take them 4 to get to a size you can see them. the pics are from today, which would have made 6 months since initial setup. i did introduce new wisteria last week, but the snails have been there before the plants. it must have been the coincidental timing of the eggs then a month later seeing them crawl around …
