So how does this work??

I'm planning on seeding this 10 gallon filter with some media from my canister filter from my 75 gallon tank. Only thing is, I'm wondering if the cartridge is really necessary. The hang on the back is just a box with a cartridge so can I take that cartridge out and put the canister media in? Or is the cartridge necessary to keep in? If it is, how should I go about doing this, can I just put the media in the extra space in the box with the cartridge? Would that prevent water from being able to pass through the filter efficiently?
For reference here is what the canister media looks like:

It should be fine if you just have the canister media in the hob.

You can take the cartridge out and just take some media from tour 75 if it’s those bio balls ⚽️ can add those or if it’s ceramic media just put em in a mesh bag then get a piece of sponge for the bottom then some polyfill then the bioballs

Ok, I thought the cartridge would be useless if I had bioballs so I'm glad to hear that.

If u want to use the cartridge u can cut it open n shake the carbon out of it then drop the bioballs into the back of the filter and when the cartridge gets dirty just rinse it out in some tank water then when it starts to deteriorate just rip that floss off and wrap it wit a new piece of polyfill
