Holy something just exploded out side. We were siting here watchin tv when we heard a loud boom and the windows lit up red. We don't know what is is that blew up but the fact that it's fiery blaze showed through our blinds is crazy. This ice is crazy.

Well I was going to say that here in OK they they declared a state of emergency and called out the National Guard, but Rach, I can't imagine what it is like to be waiting for a Cat 5 hurricane. There is no comparison. Hope it will change directions or lose power. You'll be in my prayers.

Hagmegsis, you were posting while I was writing the above. Ice storms are so scary. I've been through one where the power was out for a week for me and longer for some people. I didn't have aquariums then thank goodness. Keep your filter media wet. If you have a biowheel, put it in the tank. Do you have another source of heat to keep the fish warm? And you'll have to agitate the water surface to keep it oxygenated. Sure hope you keep your power and are safe. Ice storms are scary.

Thanks callichma, but I am OK. Pray for the Queenslanders. I have many friends, both military and aquarists alike, up north and the reports from them are not looking good.

6 hours till landfall.

humm I did not see those on the list I might just have to next time they are cute. Our power just went out 5 times in a row and the transformers are still exploding. I don't think I will ever get to go to bed. It's 12:42 at night.
The explosions are loud and the sky is pretty colors. The fire trucks that keep popping up around the neighbor hood make it a bit hard to sleep as well.

geez!! That sounds crazy! Here it's very quiet, and cold! It's supposed to get down to -27 F tonight! Hopefully I won't have any frostbitten goats come morning...

I did not hear about the hurricanes until reading this, my heart goes out to those of you in that area

My father in law called up to complain about how hot it was in Melbourne. It is like 10 degrees less there than it is here!:-\

O/h has gone to work as he is on call and I am sitting here waiting for the cyclone to hit QLD. As if things couldn't get any worse for them.

Tomorrow we are forecast for rain, rain and more rain. Oh yes.... and floods. My ute has gone in for a service and all we are left with is the pulsar and a hired commodore. Two weeks ago in the rains the bridge collapsed and we were stuck at home but least we had a car. :-\ And the kids go back to school on Friday.

So after 15hrs my power is back on. My fish actually survived. I had to put them in a small bowel and wrap it in a towel. We had no heat our thermometer read 20f I put the bowel in the tank to float so the fish can slowly warm back up and their heaters in the tank are up as high as possible. The water is so cold the surface started to freeze I can't believe they are still alive. Even our cats where curled up under lots of blankets. I think my molly is even still pregnant I was afraid she would abort her fry if she did manage to survive. We did buy an indoor propane heater and we hooked it up and it ended up not working right. It turned on but it was not strong enough. It was suppost to heat 200 square feet but if you stood more then 1/4 ft from it you could not feel it so that was a fail and $150 we have to return to the store.
They declared my city as a state of emergency transformers where blowing up all night and you could have sworn it was fire works or something. Most of the power lines collapsed and so did many of the trees. My car has about 6 inches if ice on it.
Who knows when every thing will get better. I'm just glad we all survived.

Lol, yeah it was colder then that outside. I thought I was gonna freeze to death. It took them until this afternoon to set up an emergency shelter by then our power was back on go figure. I had on 2 fleece blankets, 1 conforter, and 1 snuggie. It was cold. I was very glad to see all my pets survived even my baby snails appear to be ok and I was not able to remove them from the tank because they are to small to see with out light.
Our road is caution taped off because of the broken power line.
I can't wait for spring.

We actually had our classes canceled here in anticipation. The campus workers have been working since last night clearing snow with everything from vans and trucks with plows to bulldozers and bobcats so it doesn't honestly look that bad. The streets and sidewalks are mostly cleared with the only issue being the parking lots now. Under most of the ~6" of snow there is also a nice .5" of ice because 2 days ago and somewhat yesterday it was sleeting. I know back home in the Chicago suburbs there was at least a foot. My parents were unlucky and from the pics it looks like were 2-3 foot drifts in our driveway. and a 4-5 foot drift in front of our window.

To warm up a little your crazy weather... What about this for winter? I love Caribbean basin weather...

I took this pic last last Saturday, at Manresa, south-west of Santo Domingo City. Dolphins shoals are spotted in that area any given day. 72F at sun setting.

Pepetj
Santo Domingo

Hi-Five to that Pepetj!

I'm loving the CA weather right now. Warm, sunny, not a cloud in the sky. While half the country is freezing in a blizzard, while I head off to the beach and get a tan... (Just kidding, not actually going to the beach... Wish I were though!)

Beautiful picture, would love to see it in person...

Stayed home yesterday because although I do ice in my glass of water, I do not do ice in my Jeep.....

Got to watch the guys from next door attempt to work a car out of a snowbank in front of their house. They didn't remove their cars during the parking ban and so the plow truck plowed them in. Not his fault, he was doing his job. So, these guys haven't shoveled any snow from around their vehicles or the curb or their garbage cans since that first storm a month ago.

They actually asked my husband who was shoveling our driveway if they could leave the car hanging out into the road and half way across our driveway because they just couldn't move it. WHAT!?! We would let you do that, WHY? They finally asked our very sweet neighbor if he could tow their car out with his truck. I'll bet they didn't even thank him afterwards.

Apparently, these young men are so used to daddy shoveling for them and making sure they have full access to their vehicles, they are completely helpless now. Not to mention lazy and inconsiderate.

Funny thing is..... this morning, I literally drove over the snowbank they were stuck in last night!!!

lynda: those guys haven't used their cars in a month?! how does one get away with that?

we have plows that come down over and over, and plow the driveways in....so if you don't have say, a jeep, getting over that huge mound of ice/snow is impossible. so then we are left to dig out the drives. I just got rid of my jeep (compass) a few months ago. now I have an altima. haha.

It's like this..... one of the boy's parents owns the house and the multI family house next door to it. So, the landlord's kid had a bunch of his friends move in to his house and they rent out the apartments in the multI to people who don't suspect that a slum lord is now their landlord. I don't think any of the kids work. They're a bunch of lazy butts in every way imaginable.

I went to their door a few storms ago and said "do you know who owns the red car out there, it's parked in the middle of the street and I figured I'd come ask about it before I call the cops to have it towed". One of the kid's friends says "no ma'am, I've never seen that car before, I don't know who owns it." He tried to convince me that the red car that we see parked in that spot all the time is not this same red car. I asked him 5 times was he sure he didn't know who owned it. He kept saying no. I told him that I'm sure the police would come quickly since it was blocking traffic.

By the time I walked back into my house next door, my husband, who had been watching from the window, says "didn't take the owner long..... by the time you were half way up the driveway, someone ran out of that house and drove the car out back."

very disrespectful...and unsafe. and it gets worse and worse with every generation. when will it finally stop? when people stop being selfish and actually take the time to raise well mannered, well behaved, respectful children. don't mean to rant on the weather thread sorry lol

That's why I'm fully prepared to go to the police station, with my digital camera, and show them just what we're dealing with. I'm really hoping they'll just come and tow the cars and or give a citation to the landlord for not clearing the property within a few hours of the storm, as the law states. I really want these guys to be held accountable for once in their lives.

About every 2 weeks, I take out about 10 books. I'm a voracious reader and cannot be without at least a couple of books, mostly novels.

I finished my last book 2 days ago and have been forced to read The Mummy, by Anne Rice, which I've owned for years now and read numerous times. Today, I'm going to the library near work just so I can pick up another 10 books and get my fix.

That's a lot of books. You must have a lot of free time or you can read really really fast. I could easily read 2 of stephen kings books in one day but that's only if I don't have to go to work or classes. I wish I had more time to read, reading is more entertaining then tv and it is cheaper
