Snails In 20g

hello everyone, this morning I went to feed my fish in my 20 gallon tank and noticed a spot on the side, I tried rubbing it off before I realized it was on the inside, I looked very closely and I saw that it was moving, and had a shell. Then I looked around and there were lots of tiny snails on the glass and sand. How do I get rid of them? I have never had this problem before, please help!

You don't & you cry.

Lol no not really, I have this problem too. Some people catch them by using lettuce/cucumber/zucchini, some use assassin snails, some completely tear down their tanks.

You can use assassin snails to clean them out. You can also put a piece of lettuce in the tank overnight and in the morning you can remove the "flocks" of snails that have gathered.

I will try this, I don’t want to add assassin snails but I have heard that dwarf gouramis will eat the snails too? But I am worried I will be overstocked.
I currently am housing 5 flame tetras, a clown pleco, a chinese algae eater (not adult), 2 hatchetfish, 2 corydoras, and 2 cardinal tetras but I want to add more so they can be in a school. Will adding a dwarf gourami he overstocking?

I don't think they would eat the snails, they may eat shrimp but I doubt snails. I think you should pick either the flame, hatchetfish or cardinals for a 20g. Get rid of the two schools you don't want and up the school of the ones you want to keep. Then you could do a DG. Make sure you up your cory school also.

My DG hasn't touched any of the snails in the tank, although as ValerieAdams has said they can eat shrimp. Our blue one doesn't, but the red DG we had I am almost certain was the reason behind most of our shrimp going missing.

I added a single assassin snail based on the recommendations on here and it's certainly helped combat the problem. I take out any that are on the glass in the mornings to help, but that's only if I can see any on the gravel/plants/rocks.

Oh, well I already have the schools I have just heard of a lot of people who had used dwarf gouramis for animal infestation. Would a dwarf gourami be comparable or overstocked?

Some loaches eat snails, esp. chain and zebra. They also like to be in groups of 3-5 minimum, but are tiny. Snails often hitch rides on new plants, so it's best to treat them first if you don't want snails. I DID want snails...and it astounded me how quickly the two known hitchhikers on a plant I bought have turned into THOUSANDS You can try assassin snails, but frankly they become a plague of their own. I tried snail traps with some blanched zucchini, but ended up trapping my curious endler instead So I just put in a piece of zucchinI with a skewer, and every once and a while haul it out and drop the snails clinging to it into a cup, and repeat.

Snails aren't an emergency though--they do a lot of good in keeping your aquarium clean. If you can stand it, just smoosh them against the glass, and the fish will happily feast on the remains. Or your lfs might take the ones you catch as fish food if they have puffers or loaches, like mine does. The reason I'm breeding them is because I am turning one of my tanks into a pea puffer setup, and will have some kuhlI loaches in my main display

You don't have the full schools though right? What I'm saying is to get rid of two of the incomplete schools and complete the one. I don't think you could add a DG with 3 schools. 2 schools is crowded in a 20g

Ok, is there anything else I could add to eat snails that isn’t a snail

No, not really. You could get another 20 gallon, put your fish into there and get some puffers for the snail infested tank. Or get a 10 gallon and a puffer and feed the snails to him from the 20 gallon but you'll probably never catch them all.

Why don't you want a snail? Out of interest? Seen my assassin snail twice. The day I put him in the tank and when I next did a water change. Spends most of his time buried.

Wouldn’t the assassin snail just reproduce and cause more infestation

Not if you just buy the one. Will still have the problem, think our assassin snail is quite possibly lazy (or god forbid perished), but ours has definitely diminished in my opinion. Partner thinks its made little difference.

I tried the lettuce and caught not one snail. Any other ideas? If not I’ll probably try the assassin snail.

Kill them as you see them, you won't get rid of every last one but neither will an assassin. I also have a theory that shrimp eat snail eggs.
