A friend of mine went to a local pet store (most likely PetSmart) and was told that they don't sell snails anymore because they are an endangered species.

I was just curious what everyone thought about this.....

No, they aren't endangered. They are now regulated and one must get a license, which many places don't want to bother with so they lie about it.

I know in NY State it is illegal to sell snails because of ecological concerns as of April, 2006! I snuck over to a friends LFS and snarfed one he said I could take today!!!

In most places its primarily only the apple snails that are outright banned, due to idiots dumping them and introducing them into the public waterways and whatnot. Most places, though, allow other types of snails as long as the importers get a permit first.

SNAILS ENDANGERED!?!?!?!!! sorry that is hilarious that is like saying that house flys are endangered anyway like it has been said you need a permit and all sorts of things that are a pain in the butt to get to sell and distribute snails now so who ever told them that is a freaking liar or a prankster one of the two

They are still sold. Just not in places where they don't want to bother with getting a permit.

You think that's bad. Some guy just caught a PACU up here in a river that some jag released into the wild. A PACU!!

About 40" long with very nasty, very sharp teeth.  The one he caught weighed about a pound and a half they said.
