It may have parasites on it still, I would replace the filter cartridge. Do you still have the filter running with just a sponge?

What kind of fish do you have

How long have you had the tank set up? A cycled tank doesn’t smell unpleasant at all whether it’s being treated or not

The carbon can be reused but has a life of about 2-3 weeks. I prefer purigen.

My tank has been set up since the summer... I have just the 2 sponge filters in the hang on back and ammonia remover. It doesn’t smell right now. I also have a sponge filter inside do the tank.

I have African cichlids and bichirs

Yea I don’t know what happened last night. It doesn’t smell now but maybe because I moved around the media in the filter when taking out the carbon
