Small Water Change Technique

Sorg67

I have a 10 gallon shrimp tank. I am told I should change 10% to 15% per week.

I used a drip acclimation set up with a short airline tube into the tank. I set up the syphon and walked away.

I came back a while later and the syphon had stopped as the water had fallen below the tank end of the airline tube. I had syphoned about 9 quarts. It is a 10 gallon tank. Probably has about 9 gallons of water net of substrate, etc. So I took out about 25%.

I replaced 1 gallon. Say a 12% dilution rate or so. I will leave it like that for 2 or 3 days, add another gallon. Perhaps even another gallon in a few more days depending on evaporation. This way I am only diluting 10 to 15% each time I add water, but I am keeping the water fresher, but only have to drain once a week.

I wouldn't focus so much on the percentage as much as the paramaters making sure your nitrates don't get too high. If your process accomplishes that goal, you're in good shape.
