Slimy surface

A week ago I started setting up my freshwater aquarium. Have dosed with the start up Seachem stuff and have planted numerous plants. I very noticed a slimy film over the sunken wood I put into the tank. The wood was washed well in cold water before I put it in the tank. Any ideas on what this slimy coating is caused by please??

HI Freebie, I just washed the wood in cold water and let it float for a few days before it sank to the bottom of the tank. Have removed the two pieces and am washing them again. Hope this works. Looking forward to the interaction on this forum!!!

Welcome to the forum.

Where did you get the wood? Was it from a dealer or from the wild?

Thanks Thunder. Bought it from a dealer who said it was presoaked and treated ready to be put into the tank. Not so sure now. Hope a good wash will clear the issue.

Best wishes. If all else fails you could bleach dip it. But you need to be very careful to neutralize the bleach before putting it back in the aquarium.

here is a link to an guide on how to "prepare" driftwood for aquarium, even if it was purchased from LFS and told to be rdy to go, I would anyways do the whole preparation process

you really don't want to get any nasty poisons that will ruin your water parameters and risk losing fish.

driftwood

being over cautious in this hobby is always good way to go.
