Slight overhang on the stand but plastic trim is at least partially on

So I purchased a tank and cabinet on Craigslist. The tank is 48" long, and the cabinet is 47" long. I wish I had noticed at first, but I didn't. As it is currently situated, the tank hangs off half an inch on both sides (the 18" width of the tank is fully covered). There is black plastic trim on the tank that is at least partially on the stand on all four sides, but not entirely on two sides.

Do I need to use a piece of plywood to cover this difference in the tank? Or am I ok since part of the trim is on the stand? I would never let a glass tank hang completely off the stand with no support on the side, but this seems like a bit different of a situation and I hadn't found anything dealing with this particular situation.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

If the plastic wasn't there, would the glass at least be supported?

Yes, I think it would be at least partially on the stand on all four sides as well, with a very slight overhang on the two shorter sides.

Hmm. Can the stand be modified at all, perhaps by adding a thin strip of wood around the edges of the srand or even a sheet of plywood cut to the size of the tank underneath the tank?

Yeah I think plywood is the way to go just in case. Thanks!
