Size Hood Needed?

So I was told a 36" hood would fit my 40 gallon breeder tank, and it does not. I tried googling it, and have not gotten any good answers. So, what does fit a 40 gallon breeder? What size hood do I need to get? I'm very frustrated that I have to return the hood I ordered, and I'd just like to know what does fit my tank. Any answers are greatly appreciated!

What is the width and length of your tank?

A 40 gallon breeder is 36" x 18" x 16"

Which the hood covers the length, but not the width. There's just a huge open gap

Some canopy lids have that as easy access for filter cords, heaters, air stones, co2, and so on. If it is definitely not meant to have this gap then I recommend contacting the seller to work out a refund and getting better more accurate measurements for the next hood.

There should have been a plastic strip that came with it that snaps on in the back. You cut it down to fit the filters, and hoses etc.

This is the gap here:

I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to be that large. And this is before I even punch out the easy access spots.

Which still leads to my man question, what size hood should I have? I'm having one heck of a time finding the right size :/

Alot of times, manufactures do this to customers on purpose. If you have an 'all glass' tank, than a marineland brand canopy WILL NOT fit your tank. What is the brand of your tank? you may need to contact it's manufacturer to find a canopy that is cut correctly.

So, honestly, I'm not sure you'll be able to find a HOOD for a breeder tank. I work at a LFS and I've never seen a breeder hood. You can find a glass canopy for it. But not a plastic hood. (unless through manufacturer?).

Try this one maybe
Yep, That one is probably the one top you'll find for a 40Gal breeder. They don't make hoods that wide, at least not to my knowledge.

But honestly, I prefer the versa OVER the HOOD, though the hood Does kind of look elegant and clean, It also blocks out a TON of light.

Ah I see! I'll have to return the one I have and order this kind of cover then. How would lighting work for this? I have only ever had hoods. So I'm not sure how setting up a light with this cover would work.

I have that canopy lid and it’s pretty good, it catches evaporation, light penetrates, and looks nice. This lid does however have the gap I was talking about, I’m assuming it’s just for easy access to equipment as it leaves just enough for me to adjust the temp on my heater.

I suggest you make your own like I did. Youtube has many vids for doing this. I made mine out of plexiglass. Go to Lowes, Homedepot, etc, bring the exact measurements you want and let them cut it for you. That being said, use thick plexiglass, thin will sag, and remeasure the fresh cut plexiglass right there in front of the person there that cut it. You can also get them to cut it out of glass, just be careful they cut it the measurements you want before leaving by bringing your own measuring tape. I know this from experience, that they can cut it to short, but don't worry it will not cost you anything, just get another piece and have them cut it again.

I’m good with this one, it’s not a bad lid and I paid good money for it so why fix what isn’t broken you know?

So, a versa top, is the SAME THING as a hood minus all the black plastic. You'll receive 4 panes of glass (possibly 2, never bought a 40breeder versa before), a hinge for the middle, a clear plastic back strip for the space in the back, and a stick-on handle. Assemble all these pieces, and you'll have a clear glass top.

By assemble, the hinge and plastic strip have canals where the glass panes will fit into. So you'll have to guage what glass pane is what side (usually they're the exact same) but you'll just pop the glass into the hinge and so on. It's pretty easy, google 40 breeder versa top and take a look.

Oh, and you can cut the clear strip (and hinge) so that filters and heaters will fit just fine as well.
