I know this might be a silly question but.....
I have been reading a lot about saltwater and what salt to add to what kind of water etc etc and I just wondered, I live right on the coast I have access to what is pretty much the atlantic ocean....
the atlantic ocean is full of saltwater that marine fish live in.... (you see where this is going?)
so is there a reason why if you have a marine tank you can't use actual sea water to do water changes?

I don't have a saltwater tank but I would assume that would be a bad idea because there could be parasites or other harmful creatures in the water that could kill your fish.

There are a lot of people that actually do this. From the people that do this, most use a boat to go out a little further then what you can collect from the shore. The runoff water from the land could contain pesticides, car oil and other things that are not good for your tank.

When all is said and done, I think the best option is to purchase your own RO unit and make your own salt water in large batches.

yeah I was taking those things into account, and do have access to a boat and an area of very little polution and well away from river inlets and run off areas a fair few miles out into the atlantic currents,
it was just something I haven't really seen mentioned and wondered about.

For the time, energy and expense involved I would rather make my own. I know exactly what's in the water and don't have to worry about it.

time energy and expense are not factors if i'm already out fishing, just got to fill a few drums with water while I am out there
