well.. I was just wondering if red tail sharks could work with silica sand ( sand blasting sand )

Hi,

It could work but a different type of substrate would be better in case you wanted other bottom dwelling fish. I have 100% quartz sand and it works great.

the only other bottom dweller would be a small variety of pleco... just didnt know if it would hurt the barbles

If you have a pleco you definitely want to get a different kind. Silica can be pretty sharp so it could hurt the soft mouth of the pleco.

Good idea. Pool filter sand is mostly quartz.

Quartz sand is silica sand. Silica IS sand - SiO2. However, all sands do not share the same physical properties. I have not used sand blasting sand so I cannot attest to it's quality as a substrate, but I have tried many different kinds and there is none better than pool filter sand (including cost as a factor).
