Sick neons tetra

I had 7 neons tetra in my tank and am now down to 3. I noticed 2 yesterday who had white fungus on their mouth area, 1 was also very discoloured. I removed them both from my main tank, I am not sure if this is neon tetra disease? Two died and I had removed from the tank. I have 3 left who appear healthy and are acting normally, should I remove them from my tank or keep them in the main tank? My angelfish, zebra danio, glolight tetra and my bristlenose pleco are all fine, it just appears there was something wrong with my neons. Thanks for the help.

Sounds possibly like Cottonmouth or Columnaris. Pictures would help if you are able to get them, they're pretty fast when they want to be.

Yes it so hard to get a picture they’re so fast. The one basically could not eat food because he had the white fungus all over his mouth. It was only around their mouth area. The other one had the fungus and was not brightly coloured, appears to be super dull.

Well does sound to me (personally) like some strain of Columnaris or Cottonmouth. Hopefully other members can post some input on this.

Should I remove the other 3 neon tetra from my tank I’ve been watching them carefully they all appear fine. All the other species of fish aren’t affected it’s just the neons. Never encountered this before so unsure of how to proceed

I would say so until you figure out exactly what is going on. Continue to watch the other fish too, In my troubles with Columnaris in the past, the rest of the fish will appear healthy for a few days, then it strikes. But it could also not be Columnaris. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks, I will take them out. Hopefully it doesn’t affect my other fish!

It will most likely be Columnaris, but it is usually a strain that mainly affects Neon Tetras and does not seem to affect the other fish (provided that they are being kept in healthy conditions).

Its normal to have some Neons that remain healthy and resistant to the disease.
