Emergency Template:

Tank

1. What is the water volume of the tank?
75.708 liters (20 gallon long)

2. How long has the tank been running?
Since January 25th (5-6 months)

3. Does it have a filter?
Yes. Fluval C3 (with baffle), rotate purigen & charcoal every 2 weeks. Right now purigen is in the filter. I also have a bubble stone plugged in.

4. Does it have a heater?
Yes.

5. What is the water temperature?
25°C/77°F

6. What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.)
20-25 Red Cherry Shrimp (cant give exact number, I started out with 15 but had 2 adults die and had some babies already)

1 phoenix rasbora (started out with 10; all but 1 died during the 1st week)

5 gold ring danios (started with 7)

1 Assassin snail

Unknown amount of Japanese trapdoor snails (at least 20; it is my tank's pest snail)

A variety of live freshwater plants and some driftwood.

Maintenance
7. How often do you change the water?
2 times a week; Sunday & Wednesday evenings. I will do larger changes every 3 months though.

8. How much of the water do you change?
2-3.5 gallons every water change depending on gravel cleaning necessity (usually leaning more towards 2.5 gallons). I will change 50% every 3 months or so.

9. What do you use to treat your water?
Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water?
I vacuum both the substrate and the water. I use the following products every day/week depending on necessity:
Seachem Prime, Seachem Iron, Seachem Fresh Trace, Seachem Flourish Advanced, Tetra Easy Balance, and Seachem Excel.

*Parameters - Very Important
10. Did you cycle your tank before adding fish?
Yes. It was empty (besides plants & some pest snails) until I added the shrimp at the end of April.

11. What do you use to test the water?
API freshwater master test kit + the GH and KH mini test kit.

12. What are your parameters? We need to know the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”.

As of 3:08 PM 6/10/2020:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0.5 ppm
pH: 6.6 (usually is 6.8; it dipped .2 ppm since the 7th)
Kh: between 2-3°
Gh: between 3-4°
I will also attach my parameters in an html file from the last month to yesterday via aquarium note app for android: content://com.easilydo.fileprovider/ext_attachments_folder/1591911064055_-638531718/parameters.html

Feeding
13. How often do you feed your fish?
Usually once per day (morning/afternoon) with pellets. Have reduced feeding biofilm supplements to once every other day as of yesterday. Use API tropical flakes and tetra bloodworms occasionally (about 2 times per week).

14. How much do you feed your fish?
1/2 of a measuring spoon of Bacter AE (doesnt give specific mg; for baby shrimps)
2-3 sinking shrimp pellets (adult shrimp food)
About a couple to a few micro pellets per fish, so maybe 10-15 or so a day, same goes for the occasional flakes&bloodworms. (For danios&rasbora)

15. What brand of food do you feed your fish?
Bacter AE (biofilm supplement for shrimp), Hikari micro pellets, Tetra Shrimp pellets, occasionally API tropical flakes & tetra bloodworms.

16. Do you feed frozen or freeze-dried foods?
I feed freeze-dried bloodworms occasionally, but that's about it. I would like to start using daphnia though.

Illness & Symptoms
17. How long have you had this fish?
I have had the RCS since April 29th and the assassin, gold rings & phoenix rasbora since May 12th. The japanese trapdoor snails found their way in there the first week I made the tank (piggy backed off some plants I think, but they werent a pest until I started feeding the tank more after adding fish).

18. How long ago did you first notice these symptoms?
Shortly after adding the fish, not inverts, but became apparent there could be an issue after adding my most recent addition of plants on the 18th of May.

19. In a few words, can you explain the symptoms?
Long story short, my last danio to die I noticed started to stay to himself in the middle without swimming much, but was not at the top or bottom. He looked sort of thin and may have had a damaged fin, it was hard to tell, before I found him deceased the next day. I have 1 now acting this way again out of no where. The last two that died occurred sometime during the first 2 weeks of having them.

My shrimp deaths were random with no symptoms and I havent had any die since the 1st danio passed, and my rasbora I think just had trouble acclimating. Now, however, I am finding worms coming out if my substrate, they are now climbing on the glass and even floating! I first noticed them about 6 days ago.

20. Have you started any treatment for the illness?
Nothing beside reducing feeding and upping water changes.

21. Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase?
Not that I know of. Fish were all alive and seemed well. They were acclimated via drip for 2.5 hours before being added to tank. Rasbora deaths occurred by next morning and 2 gold rings have slowly fallen from symptoms listed above.

22. How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all?
The 1 gold ring danio showing symptoms is not at the top, nor bottom, of the tank. It stays directly in the middle and near the filter outlet. He does not leave that vicinity and slowly swims against the current. He is also sort of hunch-back looking now compared to before and thinner than usual. The rest look normal; even the shrimp. He does appear to partake during feeding times but I'm not sure if he actually eats or just participates in the activity going on around him.

23. Explain your emergency situation in detail. (Please give a clear explanation of what is going on, include details from the beginning of the illness leading up to now).

Okay. This is my specific problem. I got asian trapdoor snails and they breed like crazy even though I have NO adults. I heard that juveniles arent supposed to breed and they do not reach maturity until they are 18 weeks old or so, but mine are TINY and keep having tinier babies!

I have been scooping them out with every water change and will grab as many as I can find every time for weeks. Usually my nitrates stay at 0.5 ppm, but occasionally have been 0.10 over the last few weeks. The population wasnt a real problem until I got the fish so I think that could be why.

Now, with the bioload from everything in the tank (especially the snails), and plant matter from new plants, I noticed a new organism in my aquarium as well. I will attach photos and a video if I can.

I want to be sure these are not planaria. They look to me like rhabdocoela flatworms or detritus worms but I am not an expert. If it is planaria, however, it could very well be the reason behind the symptoms of my gold ring danios. So, my questions specifically are:

1. What could be wrong with my gold ring danio? Like, are these symptoms related to disease, age, or water quality, etc.?

2. Do you think these worms look like planaria, detritus, or rhabdo?

3. What should I do to ensure I keep my snails, and worms, populations under control?

4. What recommendations do you have for me regarding caring for my tank properly? I appreciate advice for feedings, medicines, water changes, etc.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP SO I CAN SAVE MY REMAINING 6 FISH
THANKS SO MUCH FOR ANY HELP PROVIDED.

I also wanted to point out that I purposefully lowered my pH slowly from 7.4 to 6.8 for my new fish starting on 5/8, so do not be alarmed from the steady decline! 6.8 is my target and is consistent with my usual tap, but sometimes lately it has been coming out as 6.6 (even directly from tap)

Looks like flatworms imo. If you only have one assassin snail it's not going to be able to control the population you've described.

Planarian flatworms or rhabdo? How could I go about getting rid of these without killing everything in my tank? Im aware the lone assassin wont clear out my snails though. Anyway, I'd be cool with adding some fish that eat planaria/rhabdo or something as long as they are community fish small enough for a 20 long. Thanks for your input!

They don't look like planeria to me. They are harmless flatworms.

Thanks for your comment. I also thought they look more like the rhabdo but it's nice hearing others take on it.

A couple of quotes

He does not leave that vicinity and slowly swims against the current.

to stay to himself in the middle without swimming much, but was not at the top or bottom. He looked sort of thin

When I look at the danio a see the thin stomach.

I think the the fish have parasites in their gut.
De wormer will kill the parasites and the white worms on the glass

Yes, I agree that he looks quite thin even though they definitely are being fed. I have a lot of shrimp though, so is dewormer my only option at this point? People told me before that paraguard was shrimp safe and yet it killed all of mine in my old 20 tall so if any natural methods exist I'd like to try those first. What are your thoughts on using aquarium salt?

I have used 3 different brands of de wormer that are sold in Australia. And a powder from the UK then another liquid PraziPro that I can’t remember where it’s made of hand. I have not killed any cherry shrimp.

You ask my thoughts on aquarium salt.
Its one of the few strong medication available over the counter in Australia . I don’t add salt each week . I do add a very small amount of a GH powder each week to raise GH that has saltS and minerals in it.

Guppies need a high GH if all you can get locally is salt that’s better than nothing until you can get a more complete mix.

edit ,
I just looked at this chart , guppy’s need around 150 ppm GH .
