Long story short, I bought a betta fish/Siamese fighting fish from a terrible aquarium store, he was in a bad way, I wanted to help him out, so I took the guy home.

He has ich/white spot, and fin rot,
the fin rot has taken half of his tail. the ich/white spot is covering a substantial amount of his body.

I've had him for 3 days, I got his medicine and I'm wondering whether I can treat him for fin rot and ich/white spot, at the same time?
or should I treat him for one first, whether the meds interact with each other?

His previous conditions were wuite stressful/70 other fish in the tank with him, dirty water etc.
Maybe the ich/white spot has caused the fin rot? So the ich may need to be treated first?

He's in a 4 gallon, has a heater and slow moving sponge filter with an air stone.
Any advice is much appreciated, thank you in advance.

I wouldn't use the Melafix. Probably just being in clean water will help his fins alot. Unless they're rapidly deteriorating I'd start the ich treatment now, after 48 hours do a 50% water change (instead of the 25% they mention), repeat. The ich should be gone after two or three treatments but I would do a 50% water change every 48 hours.

If his fins don't start improving then I'd pick up some API Furan 2 or Tetra Fungus Guard both of which will treat the fin rot. Often all they need is clean water to heal up unless its bacterial.

I am just a newbie but my Betta came down with 2 different issues - something white on his head and something yellowish on his body...people really couldn't make out what it was so I settled for something called "API General Cure" - which is a combination of medications and treats a whole host of different illnesses ...I believe finrot and ich are among those but best to double check if you considered it.

Whatever he had it cleared it up within 24 hours of his second dose - it did seem to be pretty aggressive treatment - he in fact looked really awful after his first dose and he wasn't all that weak from his illnesses yet - he was eating and swimming about...

The only other issue is it comes in a packet for a 10 Gallon Tank - what I did is measure out the amount in the packet - 1 teaspoon by my completely messy and imprecise method method - and estimated for my 3 gallon tank about 1/8th teaspoon (the fish store said less was better and I approximated his actual tank water at closer to 2.75 gallons) for his second dose I used a bit less because it seemed to really pack a wallop.

Just my 2 cents in case you needed to consider another medication.

Hope he gets well soon

Unfortunately General Cure won't treat ich or most fin rot issues. The ingredients in general cure are mostly for parasites (praziquantel) and there is metronidazole in there which will treat some bacteria also. It wouldn't be my first choice in this scenario.
