Sick Betta Or Just Lazy??

I got a betta a month ago and he has been lazy from the day I got him...
I have trained him and he is always following my fingers. Whenever I sit near the aquarium he swims happily. He keeps swimming until I don't go. But as soon as I go from there, he returns to his favorite spot and just sits there. He eats very happily. But the thing is that most of the time I am out of my house and I am sure whenever I am not there he is not even moving.
I have him alone in a 4 gal tank. I have a heater and filter as well.
Can it be that he is getting bored alone?

Are there any plants in his tank? Having plants and decor is a good way to keep his surroundings interesting! You might also consider adding shrimp or snails for extra interest. Or how about live foods like mosquito larvae? Great mental stimulation with those!

Yes when I got him I did put a live money plant but it seemed like he was least interested.. He rarely went near the plant.
I do have a piece of hiding wood though. He goes in there several times a day
I wouldn't want to feed him live food because the last time I did that, he got the ice parasite.

What's an ice parasite? You do have to be careful where you get your live foods for sure. I set out clean buckets of water and rinse them before feeding.
