Shy and skittish fish, african cichlids.

Hey everyone, my African cichlids are quite skittish and whenever I come near the tank they hide from me, it's not like there's a lack of hiding spots in the tank too, and although they are African cichlids there aggression is minimal. I would just like to know if there are any tips for them to get more comfortable, thanks!!

Your tank is open on all sides. Put a opaque backing on the back of the tank. That way the fish have safe caves to go into if a large scary blob approaches the tank. As it is they are exposed and have no hiding place. Fish know that if they can see it, it can see them! They are very smart at fishy stuff.

How long have they been in this set up? If new, it will take some time for them to feel comfortable. I agree that having a background will help.

Hey all, they have been in this tank now for around one and a half years, the tank does have a black background on it but can't tell by the reflection, do you think I should get a rock background instead??

The smooth black background just reflects, the fish still feel open. It still looks to them like it is exposed to the outside.

Yes, switch the background to something that does not reflect - a rough background, or rock pattern.

Also put rocks along the sides to block the view to the sides. Give them caves to hide in where they are not exposed to the open water.

I think the extensive rock hardscape provides too much cover & concealment, resulting in natural survival responses from the fish.

Ia this a new behavior? Has anything significantly changed? How many fish in what size tank? Sorry if I’m asking questions you already answered.
