Okay, this may take a bit.

As I'm sure we all know, the $1 Per Gallon Sale is on!!!! Before I get into that though, let me give you a short rundown. This is a quick list of my tanks.

20 Long
1 Male Betta Splendens
8 Harlequin Rasboras
6 SterbaI Corys (planning on)

5.5
1 Male Betta Splendens

40 Breeder
8 Black Skirt Tetras
8 Panda Corys
3 Bolivian Rams (think all female, may try to get a male)

10 Gallon
1 Blue Crayfish
Varied amount of Rosy Red Minnows as feeders

10 Gallon Quarantine
Currently empty

So now the fun part starts (for those still reading). I'm wanting to sooner or later upgrade my crayfish to a 20 gallon ($1 Sale). If I did this, it would give me another empty 10 gallon. So should I.....

Option 1
Just use it as a second quarantine or fry tank.

Option 2
Make a new build with guppies, and use the fry as healthier feeders for my crayfish.

Option 3
Use it as a split betta tank for my two bettas, thus opening up a centerpiece spot in my 20 long for something else. Then use the 5.5 as a second smaller quarantine (don't know if this would even work).

Option 4
Make a new build with nano fish.

Option 5
Split the 5.5 for the bettas, have a new centerpiece in the 20 long, AND a second 10 quarantine.

Option 6
I've dabbled with the idea of throwing a couple mollies in the 40. I could then use the 10 as a fry tank and use the molly fry as feeders for the crayfish.

I know this was a long and drawn out question, but what do you guys think I should do?

Thanks for reading.

Utilize the 50% off for like a 75 gallon and add to your existing schools. I like option 6 though if I had to choose. Or you could try a nano saltwater tank. :0

My PetCo doesn't carry 75 gallon tanks. Plus, they're no longer 50% off on the sale I don't think. Saltwater is a definite no go right now. I would love to one day, but not now.

That is definitely awesome. Unfortunately, don't have that much $$$ to work with. I'll keep that in mind though. I do want a 75 someday for fancy goldfish. I would also love to upgrade my 40 though. Lol.

I’ve been playing in the stock market recently, got lucky, made about 500 dollars, which all went into my new fish room. Lol

Option 3 or 4. 4 is better. Options 2&6 are NOT an option. How could you?

Crayfish has got to eat too.......

Do you think a 5.5 would make an okay quarantine/fry tank?

Depends on what you want to use the fry for. Hmmm?
Yes it would be an ok qt tank.

I like option 3. Split the 2 bettas in the 10 gallon, then that opens up a 5 gallon, which could also be a secondary quarantine, or you could play with it as a new pico tank, and you can do a new centerpiece in the 20 long, or maybe a pair of something. Like honey gourami, for example.

I love honey Gouramis!

Go with option 2. That way if you get a sick fish/or new fry while the qt is in use you got somewhere to put them.

I like option four, the crayfish doesn't need healthy fish to eat they are pretty much underwater carrion eaters, helps to have him if you need to get rid of extra fish that you no longer want though. Nanos are neat.
I mean my angels are all down for snacks that are otherwise unhealthy (deformities or injuries that make life hard for the gup, or just too darn stinking many of them).

I think I'm liking the sound of this option. However, I don't think honeys would be temp compatible at 78 Fahrenheit would they? Plus, I'm thinking about putting honeys in my 40 anyway. Any other ideas for an interesting centerpiece for 78 degrees in a 20 long? Still not sure about using a 5 gallon quarantine though.....

Well he does in fact hunt his minnows down. People have been giving me all kinds of grief about giving him minnows because they're diseased and not nutritional. You're saying it doesn't matter though?

Option 7: upgrade the lonely betta to the 10, leave the 5.5 open in case community betta ever goes on a killing spree.

I say this because you already have a qt, so...
I recently upgraded my last betta to a 10 and he is getting healthier. I now have 2 empty 5s.
I don’t really think a 5 gal is big enough to qt much.

Edit: could you start keeping guppies in the 20 gal crayfish tank and use the fry as feeders, or would he eat the adults too? Or would he over eat?

Are there other fish you plan to breed? That might change my opinion. I’m also just not a big fan of live bearers. . But I think I would prefer raising my own feeders than buying them, if it were an option.

Rosy reds are pulled from stream like habitats, sometimes even the ones shipped in result in a small crayfish also being in the bag (as well as mosquito fish), the crayfish grows well and has no issues living with and eating those fish that come in. They naturally will eat dead things in creeks, plants, fish, other inverts they don't really care it is all food to them.

Okay, people may shoot me for this, but I'm not a big fan or supporter of a single betta in a 10. I feel it's wasted space. Thank you for your input though.

Guppies in a crayfish tank? Let's put it this way, he does hunt. I don't ever have to worry about overstocking feeder minnows for him now. He catches them before my cycle can even get overloaded. However, in a bigger tank I've heard they hunt less. My worry on that is he would nap the slower pregnant females at night.

If that’s not an option for you, I would do option 1, 2, or 3. 1 means one less tank to maintain, 2 gives you a new species and healthy feeders, and 3 opens up a spot in the 20. Though I’m not a fan of split tanks, just from experience. I had a 20L split for 2 Bettas, and the female jumped the fence and killed the male (actually my mom’s tank).

Wasn’t sure if the cray would hunt the adults, though it would make sense, especially if he ran out of fry.
