Shrimp tank filter?

Question for you shrimp owners, any preference on a sponge filter vs. a HOB?

I have a petco 3.7 cubic with the built in filter (like the fluvals I believe) and it is terrible at keeping the tank free from debris. I'm considering removing that filter (which will free up some swimming space too!) and putting in either a sponge or HOB. I'm assuming a sponge won't be amazing at debris either, but the HOB will have a prefilter sponge so same deal.

Any pros/cons to either or both? Please and thank you

If you go with an HOB, go with one of the minI ones so it doesn't take up too much room and it's not too strong.

I personally use sponge filters in my shrimp tank because it's easy!

I like the HOBs for the extra media space, but you can't beat the price of a sponge filter.

I was planning this HOB:

Or just a single sponge.

How often do you rinse the sponges? If ever?

I rinse them with my weekly water change, but you could probably get away with less.

I can't view the link - what's the name of the filter?

If you are using a HOB, why not cover the intake with a prefilter? That's what I do and it keeps the mail filter cleaner and keeps the babies out of the intake from getting sucked in.

Alternatively, you can get a sponge ( like the one used in Aquaclears ) and cut an X in the bottom and slip that over the intake.

It's AZOO Mignon Filter 60.

What kind of substrate do you use in your shrimp tank?

I was using sand but I switched them over to Fluval shrimp substrate and then Turface Pro League. I don't think shrimp are picky.

I also was using sand, but I don't really like it. Just started a tank with aqua soil so waiting to see how that pans out. Might have to research the turface pro, never heard of it. Thanks for your input! I love hearing what other people use and what works well (partly why I'm on the forum!)

I have HOBs on my shrimp tanks. Yes, you'll need to rinse out the pre-filter sponge, but stuff does stick to it well, and the shrimp use it for an extra place to graze

So I ended up going with a sponge filter because a HOB won't work with my glass lid (I don't want to cut it, but I have young kids so a lid is a MUST). Also, ordered some Mr. Aqua aquarium soil for substrate. Everything should be here tomorrow but I may not get to it until this weekend. I will post some pics when I can though
