Shrimp Deaths, Why!?

Over the last couple of days I've had 2 shrimp deaths - a CRS and a red shrimp (not cherry or crystal, just a normal red).

Tank is a 40 litre planted, that also has 4 otos, 1 male Betta, a lemon shrimp and an orange shrimp.

Water params are...
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 10ppm
PH: 7.5-8
Temp: 27 degrees C

I understand the temp was too high for CRS (LFS failed to inform me that they like it cooler, although admittedly I should've done more research before buying), so I guess that's why he died... But honestly I can't see why the other red one kicked it this morning. They've only been in there just over a week, and he was bigger than all the others and seemed very active even last night.

I am trying to help keep the tank cooler with water changes, I normally keep it around 25-26c but weather has just been so hot, it was 30c in here yesterday.

I haven't seen orange anywhere for a day or so and am now worried he may be next, but lemon seems ok... Any ideas to keep them alive? I'm pretty new to inverts and I wasn't sure if the Betta was maybe attacking them (although I've never witnessed it, he usually just ignores them)

Get a gh/kh test kit & a tds meter. These are so important when it comes to shrimp.

I will do, I have been reading and didn't realise this was so important with inverts. Another newbie mistake

That temp 30c will kill your crs ideal is 22c they don't like change so to many water changes are bad, ideal ph is 6.5 so you are a little high. Your orange and Lemon are a little more hardy but still need care. Your better may attack so that can contribute to fatataly. Tds for crystal should be 130 to 150 they will live in 200+ but wount breed. Float some cold packs to lower temp or better still if you can direct air flow from a fan across the water surface that will cool it down quite quickly.stop to many water changes it's bad.

I see your in Suffolk, I'm in bedford and would be more than happy to restock your shrimp free but first the tank must be right, you would have to collect as I will not post I don't like it

Thank you for the offer - I don't think I'll restock just yet, as you say my setup isn't really shrimp-friendly it seems. I only did 1 water change to try and lower the temp, it's just unfortunate that it was too late for them. I may try again in a few months, just let things settle for a while

when you ready get in touch and ill help where needed on the setup for shrimp, as a first shrimp it may be better to go down the road with red cherries and sakura which are a little easier to look after than crystals, don't let it get to you, there are always red cherries for sale on the outskirts of london 50p each or if you want crystal the offer stands, the other thing I failed to mention is all shrimp should be dripped for a few hrs before being introduced into the tank,if you didnt do that, that will kill them, take a look on youtube on how its done, hope it all works out for you
