Hey all,

I have a 3 gallon tank and I'm gona start breeding shrimp so far I have an Amano Shrimp (not breeding the Amano) and a yellow shrimp. I have ordered 6 shrimp (3 red crystal shrimp and 3 black crystal shrimp) and today I'm going out to get a cherry shrimp or something that's holding eggs. Any tips or advice is welcome.

Personally, I would find it hard to breed them in that small of a tank, because I've seen other shrimp breeding setups, and they were around 10 gallons.

Although, you may still have success in doing it, I'm encouraging you to do what you think is best for yourself on this one. I hope you can breed some shrimp!

Thanks for the reply, I chose shrimp because they have little to no bioload and they're small so I thought they would be the best option. I'll post a picture tomorrow of all of them in my tank. What temp would you reccomand to breed them?

Hold On! No shrimp buying today!!!
You have ordered some very pricey shrimp. We need to get that tank of yours ready. Crystal shrimps require VERY different conditions than Neocaridina (Red cherry, blue velvet, orange, etc.)
You need to get your pH in the low 6's and it needs to be stable. Not an easy task.

I have driftwood and it's over 6 (not low though) about 6.5-6.8 if not I'll get something instead of a cherry a rillI or something?

6.5 would be okay. It's stable there? If so that is good. So you are targeting the highest value for the crystals and the lowest value for the reds and yellows. Keep us posted on how it works out. I'm interested in seeing if both groups breed or only one.

Just so you know (if you don't already) there's quite a difference between CRS and RCS when it comes to how easy they are to care for and breed.
If you just want to breed shrimp and not any specific kind of shrimp, RCS are definitely the easier choice.

Good news, I got 2 red rilI shrimp already holding eggs and a tangerine tiger shrimp (his colour caught my eye)! Looking forward to seeing the baby shrimp. I see one of them is holding more eggs than the other. I also heard that shrimp don't eat baby ones so that's good.

I only started noticing my shrimp breeding more when I moved them into my 7gal cube - I have a single amano(which I actually managed to save from disaster - originally had 2) and a ton of RCS. Shrimp are scavengers so they will only eat dead plant, algae, and any dead shrimp so no worries about losing babies. Good luck with your breeding.

Thanks, I used to have 2 amanos but 1 escaped and dried up!! I figured it was ammonia so I moved out the molly fry and did a water change and now they're all happy.

One of mine got poisoned by copper on a plant and died and the other I managed to save by putting him in water from another tank - now I never make the mistake of adding plants straight to my shrimp tank

Really, I quarantine my plants! Now, the rilI shrimp are smallish so does that mean the babies will be smaller than usual?

Now I do lol! Not necessarily, sometimes they can be but it just means she will carry less eggs.

She has a lot of eggs but they're kinda small. Also, I'm putting them in a 5 gallon so I hope it helps.

Wait, do you still have the crystal shrimp on the way?

Cherry shrimp and rilI shrimp are basically the same thing, both are neocaridina davidI but with different coloration.

Crystal shrimp are caridina cantonensis and have hugely different requirements. They are extremely fragile. They need a low, steady ph, usually done by using a buffered aquarium soil such as ADA aquasoil. They need 0-2 KH, and about 4 GH. This is achieved by using remineralized RO water. Not an easy shrimp to keep.

I might move them then... they're the ones thriving?

Which ones are you talking about? The main issue is, do you have crystal shrimp on the way or already in your tank?

They are in the tank Mak. You would need to see his other thread "Shrimp Dying?"

I should reply to this on the other thread. Give me a minute.
