Should You Listen To Advice From Your Lfs Or Fishlore?

AquaticJ

HI everyone! So I wanted to give you valuable advice. I’ve been working at a LFS for around 3 years now. It’s great, I love helping people with their fish. However....not all of my coworkers know as much as I do. If I’m working and there’s a freshwater fish question, I’m usually flagged down by them so they don’t give out misinformation. Luckily, I have several coworkers that do know as much as I do, so most of the time there’s someone there to help correctly. Unfortunately, sometimes there’s not one of us working. On occasion I’ll have a customer tell me he/she was told something wrong by another employee. That’s my un named store...let me give you some more convincing stories. The other day a customer told me he needed amoxicillin for white spots on his fish (Ick), and that the LFS that told him to get it was out of it. To my surprise he was told that by a very reputable, privately owned store, that I still think very highly of. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used to combat bacterial infections, Ick is a parasitic infection (and a common one at that). The next story comes from a customer that said she was told that Axolotl (an aquatic amphibian) cannot get Ick. She was told that by another very popular fish store, that I do not like admittedly. That statement is simply untrue. Her Axolotl did not make it. My last example comes from a friend who used to be an “aquatic specialist” at Petco, and his lack of very simple knowledge is concerning. Like not being able to explain the Nitrogen Cycle. To get to my answer, unless you’re absolutely sure that this person knows what he or she is talking about, ALWAYS come here. Especially if your fishes life is dependent on it. If someone says something wrong on here, they’re quickly corrected 99.9% of the time. Thanks for taking the time to read this everyone! Best of luck

I frequent several LFS, but there is only one that I really trust when it comes to questions I may have. It usually has to do with stocking.

As some of you may know, my stocking is very conservative, so I usually trust them to answer any questions related to that over Fishlore, because I know the answer I’ll probably get here and will automatically get shutdown. Well, that's what I see a lot of, not necessarily have experienced that myself. On the other hand, although my LFS is also a very conservative stocker, they usually pull me away from any strange ideas I may have. Lol.

Fishlore I trust with plant, fertilizer, equipment, meds, etc questions.

So for me, it all depends on the questions I need answering.

I tend to use a mixture of both. I go in there, I'll see something I like, ask them the basic questions but always follow up with further research - not only fishlore, but other sites for a developed understanding.

I use a combination of things. most of my learning about plants came from Aquarium co-op on YouTube. most of my knowledge of aquarium equipment came from here or my lfs. As far as stocking, it's a toss up. at my lfs, they seem to kinda **** a little with smaller community type fish. But with anything cichlid or saltwater they seem to be straight up and tell you what the best options are. everything else I either learned from here, research or trial and error.

As far as most of my LFS they don't know a female or male guppy from there butt. Sad really sad.

It’s actually incredibly easy once you see it once, you look at their analfin. If it’s rounded it’s a female and if it’s pointed/almost sharp it’s a male.

I consult both fishlore and my LFS for any information.
Basically what everybody above me said though.

If I ever get conflicting info, I do a little research and it usually shows which side is right.

Beautiful Discus by the way.
