I have been wondering whether I should upgrade my Betta tank from a 6.5 gallon to a 10 gallon.
I know this is a dumb question, but thoughts?

I love 10gal. I have 2 bettas in 2 planted 10gal. I find 10gal cheap at LFS $12 plus easier to keep peremeters in check tgan smaller tanks

I'm thinking I'll do the upgrade because my LFS has a 10 gallon tank for $22. Ihave all the supplies already.
I'm excited now!

$22 is a lot for a standard 10g. The most I have ever paid for one is $14 and that was at a small local fish store. If you want to support a local business that’s great just thought I would let ya know.

Pretty cheap where I live considering most go for about $50-$80.

The tank brand is Tetra.

Well, if you call 1000 miles nearby, sure

Upgraded our betta's tank from a 5 gallon to a 30 gallon and he was both excited and confused lol. They love their space and they love plants to hide and swim in! We also bought a snail and a small bristlenose pleco that he doesn't really mind. He's met them a few times and just kinda meh'd.

Is there anyway you could order one online without shipping costing you a fortune?

The only ones I could find online was $57 with free shipping on Amazon and the other was from some online fish store (forgot the name) and it was about $25 with about $50-$60 shipping. So yeah, hilarious.

Ouch, they're really wanting you to sell your soul for a fish, huh?

If you can't find it anywhere else for cheaper, then go for the one at your lfs. Just remember that with a bigger tank comes more maintenance and cleaning. If you want to either get plants or a pleco or something to help keep the levels manageable, I'd definitely suggest doing so (if you can!) ^^ your betta will love you forever for it lol.

The betta I have in a 10g do seem to be happier but I actually find the tank cleaning easier. Maybe that’s just me but idk. If you do choose tank mates I would not do other fish in a 10g. I would just go with a snail

That's fair- (most) plecos are peaceful to bottom dwellers and some stay small enough to not be seen as a threat to the betta, so theyre the safest bet out of any fish, especially with their "armored" skin- but snails are your safest bet for sure. I went straight from a 5 to a 30, so I don't know how easy/hard a 10 gal is comparatively. ^^'

Then again, I gave my betta and my pleco plenty of spaces to hide and explore, and enough to keep them both occupied as well. Easier to do in a bigger tank, so start with the snail for sure.

Edit: A 10 gal is kinda small for any 2 fish unless they're like guppies though xD

To me the issues isn’t compatibility, but space. There aren't any plecos that are small enough to live in a 10g into adulthood. You would need closer to 30g, or upgrade/move the pleco once they start growing.

Yeah, I realized that after I clicked post, so I edited it xD The inch per gallon rule is very outdated, but I personally really like that aqadvisor site that someone posted on here. Great for figuring out your boundaries and your range for your tank as well!

If you want to, sure. If you feel hes doing just fine though I see no reason to have to upgrade, really up to you. He'll appreciate the extra space ofc.

Wait I’m confused here: what pleco would you be ok leaving in a 10g their whole life. I have never heard of a pleco with a minimum tank size below 20g?

I was suggesting more on the betta tankmate front for if they ever decided to upgrade later- every pleco I've seen needs a req of 20 gal as well, but they do better in larger tanks. (Also more suggesting based off of my own experience what works with bettas- a bristlenose is DEFINETLY too small for either a 10 or 20- it need a min of 25 or 30 because of its possible size)

Apologies for the confusion; I'm extremely exhausted and english is not my friend at the moment ^^'

If you can upgrade, do it!! My third and current betta lives in a 10g, and I don't think I could put one in a smaller tank again! He uses all the space and loves to play in the rocks and plants. If you have the ability to get a bigger tank for any fish, I'm pretty sure there's never a reason not to. Bigger is always better!

For such a small tank (10 gal is still considered small), I'd stick with snails- or I've heard of ghost shrimp being okay with bettas? Never looked into it, so if anyone else wants to take that one, the floor is yours lol

Mystery snail! They are fairly large so no risk of being eaten at least. They also come in fun colors. I like the gold ones

I have pygmy cories in my 10g with my betta and that works great for me. Depends on the individual betta though

That's true.

Depends on if they're male and female; and then the individual betta's temperament and personality. Ven (my betta) is more laid back until he sees a larger fish with flowy fins. Then its all-out war.

He's fine with his reflection and fine with both bigger and smaller plecos, but if he sees an angelfish? He acts timid at first, but then attacks at night.

AquaticQueen,
Male bettas are more likely to be aggressive than females, but I would still do your research and test the waters with, say, a snail or a very small fish (like, feeder fish) before considering any other fish as tankmates later on down the road. ^^

My betta is a male and I have tried tankmates before, but he hated them. I think I'll stick to snails and shrimp.
