My family had a lucky bamboo from chinese new year 2017. On end of 2020, my dad said to add a fish so its less boring. So we bought an aquarium bowl then buy a betta fish from some street vendor. It has been 6 months and the only thing i do is feed the fish. I never do water change because I cannot find the poop and the water is always clear unlike my turtle aquarium that gets dirty every feeding. I read that without filter, I should do partial water change every week, should i do that or should i just leave it be and change when the aquarium starts getting dirty?

i recorded the aquarium this morning for more details

//UPDATE//
I try to water change immediately as recommended, and yes I found there are actually poop stuck below bamboo roots, Imma try to do water change and remove the poop every week.

Well first of all I recommend getting a 5 gallon tank for them. No fish deserves to be in a tank smaller thank 5 gallons. And YES water changes are necessary! Your fish might be slowly dying of ammonia poisoning right now! Immediately change 75% of the water. Please get it a bigger tank with a filter heater and clean water with water changes

Yes. Yes you should. do probably a 60% right now, then 50 every week. And even with a filter you still need to do water changes. Also, bettas need a 5 gallon tank or bigger. And, Welcome!

Hi, and welcome to Fishlore! There are a few things I noticed that I wanted to point out.

#1 - A betta can NOT survive in a bowl. It needs a 5-10 gallon tank, with the correct volume that is properly equipped with a heater and filter. It's like a janitor saying, "should I only clean the public toilet when it looks dirty"? ---> Although it has tons of bacteria/other microorganisms.

#2 - I'm not sure what you feed it but bettas are carnivorous and need foods with high protein and nutrition that will help contribute to their overall growth/health.

If you experience more uncertainty, we are always here on Fishlore. = )

Thank you for the suggestion!, I have a transparent plastic container, It should be 5 gallon or more. Imma try move the bamboo and fish there. Also do you think heater is needed if I live in Indonesia where temp is around 25-30 Celcius (around 80F)?

Probably don't need a heater then.

Personally, I would keep my betta in a glass tank, but if that would not work out with you and your family, I totally understand.

Also something about plastic --> When plastic is heated over long periods of time, the heat begins to break the chemical bonds of the plastic and releases chemicals in whatever it's housing, FROM the plastic. That's why they say don't warm your food in a plastic container or drink water from a bottle that has been left in the car for a long time.

I see i don't think my family will allow a heavy glass aquarium. I search on online shop and found some acrylic aquarium. I guess its better than plastic containers?

The tub will do fine for now. Ask your family, glass is typically cheaper than acrylic.
