So I got these tiny bugs in my tank in the beginning they were very not noticeable the tank looked beautiful it could’ve been taken straight out of like a museum

but i got depressed And stop taking care of it

now it looks like trash and these little guys are everywhere

when I was first setting everything up I got a guppy he lived in there probably about seven months then he died out of nowhere he couldn’t swim upright anymore later that day he passed

but no worry he was old like 1 year or 2

I got a second one after about a week he was gone like just gone did not find a body to this day no he did not jump out
I know this because that guppy was not a jumper I’ve never seen him jump also we could not find him on the floor

but he was in there with like 25 shrimps

but one by one they all went missing one day there was 25 next there was 10 now there is none in the tank it’s been about a year
I am blaming these little bugs for killing them everything was fine and it’s not like there’s 10 or 20 there’s like 500 I stop doing water changes all together I know it’s contaminating my equipment no matter how much bleach I use

I’ve even found a few in my other tanks

I really want to redo this tank and try shrimp again because I really do love them

do you think I should and also what is the cause is it really these little guys or is it something else

I also cleaned out the tank about a few months ago and didn’t find anything no bodys

The tank smells so bad basically like salt and fish

its a 3.5 gallon bowl

Those look like seed shrimp. They will not kill your fish. Fish will eat them though. :)

Maybe your fish were dying because you stopped taking care of the tank? The water should not smell like salt and fish. Your tank doesnt need salt, and water changes will make it not smell.

If you do try shrimp again you have to keep up on water changes and monitoring the parameters closer. Shrimp are more delicate than fish and need more care. All fish need your attention or they will parish without it. :)

that was the only reason I stopped is because they were gone.

those are not baby shrimp the shrimp are gone you can see up close they’re obviously not shrimp the picture of course is kind of blurry and judging how I clean the tank a few months ago like dumped everything out there are no shrimp in the tank I don’t know where they went there should be remnants or something there’s not they did not jump out the fish did not jump out it Has to be these things

Yea checks out but if you could see the tank in person there’s millions of them

like I can’t even look at the tank without it being clouded by them

truly do you think that would kill them that there’s just too many

I did not neglect the tank when I had the shrimp

I’d really like to redo it and add some cherries

The bowl is beautiful in itself

so how do I get rid of them

You've got a source of food for any new inhabitants it seems! Nature is great that way!

You could always just start over or try to vac as many out as you can. Fish will eat them. There has to be some kind of food source for them to multiply so fast.

How to get rid of them tho

May I ask what do you think killed the shrimp?
I took care of the tank until all of them were gone

I'm going to preface my response with the fact i am VERY new to this hobby.

But you said your water smelled like salt. Which makes me think you there is something in there, have you tested or let test the water? Or added some sort of chemical?

The "bugs" didn't kill, they are a symptom, a result.

I don’t think I did I haven’t tested it in a long time it’s been about a month

I just want to get some new shrimp clean out the tank but first I need to figure out what the problem is and why they died

If you're dead set on getting rid of them, they are aquatic.
So getting rid of all water, rinsing everything out should get rid of most, if not all of them. Keep in mind, if you rinse everthing with untreated water any and all BB's are gone as well.

A thought did occur to me, have you checked filters/nooks and crannies for any passed away creatures that might be leeching things into the water? The "Salt" smell is unusual to me, every bit of research i've done says a healthy aquarium has no smell or an earthy smell.

Post some pictures of the tank and the water parameters. Thats the only way we could possibly even start to see what happened.

Have you cleaned the tank at all?

Vacuum some out if you can.

Ik my other aquarium smell like that earthy or nothing

unless they’re cycling

it smells disgusting do not like it

I have checked I took the bowl about two months ago by the way there has not been nothing living that I have seen other than the shrimp seeds
For about a year
I took everything out wrenched everything out just did not remove the substrate and there is nothing in that tank

I did a small water change this morning not intentional though h to take some water out because I was moving it
The parameters are going to be very different
Like I said I’ve let the tank go

Because after I noticed there was no living thing in it and I was really sad it was hard for me to keep up with it

but of course I’m gonna put something living in it I’m gonna keep up with it
I could show parameters but just know that could not also be the reason that the shrimp passed

Here’s a picture of the tank again I just did a water change this morning so it’s kind of clear right now

Seems like too much nutrient buildup since you weren't doing water changes.

Just let it run for a few weeks, do not add any food or ferts. Eventually all that waste will be consumed and copepods and worms will disappear and water will clear up and it will be habitable to fish and shrimp again

Going forward, once fish/shrimp are added make sure to feed very sparingly. Maybe once a week or so (I personally dont feed small tanks like this at all but this is just for my water parameters and tank environment)

It’s been running for months it still has had a filter in it and a air pump and even a heater

they're probably feeding off the detritus
is there any dead plant matter, algae, etc? when was the last time you vacuumed the tank?
i saw that you said you did a wc recently; did you vac along with it?
if you can, buy a new siphon and a small bucket to prevent the spread of the seed shrimp to other aquariums, as their eggs can survive outside of water for long periods (home depot and lowes both have 3.5-gallon buckets)
plus, ostracods and copepods usually thrive in stagnant water, so try increasing your filter flow and keeping up with your wcs and gravel vacs
is it possible if you can post the water parameters?

I’ll post the water parameters later for it is 9 o’clock where I live and I am tired I did not know the eggs can live that long I just sucked out water no gravel
What went on in the months? Only water top-offs? What's the TDS, GH and KH of the tank water now?
I do not have a test kit to test that
