Should I quarantine shrimp ? I need to get some more variations and there's a cheap source in my town but not very reliable so are there any diseases the shrimp can carry? And if I was to quarantine can I treat them with anything to make the process quicker? Currently I would only be able to have an air stone or sponge filter in the quarantine and no heater.

Yes there are many shrimp diseases and parasites... I introduced shrimps from an unreliable source about a year ago and had to do 2 salt dips per shrimp on more than 60 shrimps to get rid of the parasite...

What shrimp is it? No heater and just a bubbler might be enough.

I was thinking of getting more Amano shrimp as I have one in my tank from the same place but he was the first shrimp so he didn't get quarantined. I have a plastic 1gal tank ( like one that many people wrongly keep bettas in) would that be ok with the bubbler? And what meds should I use if any?

Don't use meds. Most contain copper which is deadly to inverts. Just observe and see if you find signs of diseases. Google "common shrimp diseases" and you'll find good articles with pictures.

Ok will do! How long should they stay in quarantine for? I have never quarantined shrimp before

Ah ah no idea! I have never quarantined before. I just know that from an unreputable source, you could get parasites and that it's a pain to get rid of them afterwards...

I do have some external parasite meds with malachite green (No copper) could that be used ? Just preventively ? Last time I bought from them that were fine though and one died from my stupid mistake but no parasites or diseases. The one I still have is almost a year old now , he is smaller than you'd expect for an Amano shrimp though - which is good bc he's on a tank full of neos.

At that point, I don't have the answers for you anymore. Let me call in Lchi87 for you.

BTW, Lchi87, please tell me if I should stop making you my go to shrimp person

HI there! I'd quarantine for around 4 weeks. In terms of medications, I am hesitant to recommend any, since inverts are very sensitive. I can only offer personal experience and so far paraguard by seachem has not affected any of my inverts (red cherry shrimp, various snails, and ghost shrimp). Your mileage may vary though.

Florian Pellet I don't mind the mentions I don't pretend to be a shrimp expert but I will always try to help!

Thank you for the advice. I will quarantine if I decide to buy from the source I spoke about.
