Should I get the tap water conditioner from here on out?

I'm a beginner when it comes to keeping fish, so when I got the fish tank from someone it came with all the stuff to go with it. And the man told me what to use and when .Well he gave me acc clear, and told me to use it to dechlorinate the water .But today at the fish store I saw they have actual tap water conditioner .Have I been using the wrong thing this whole time? Is that why I haven't been successful in keeping fish? Should I get the tap water conditioner from here on out??

if the stuff says it removes metals and chlorine and chloramines it probably does the same thing because tap water has both of those things. but if you're going to be using tap water an ammonia solution might help also like seachem prime which eliimates ammonia toxicity for like 48 hours I think... its in my tap water which I don't use anymore . I have no idea what acc clear is though.. anything that says what it does is better imo. but I only started fish keeping like almost a year ago so I'm not that much more experienced than you are =) just trying to help

I'm not familiar with ACC Clear, but it should say if it's a dechlorinator. The top choice really is Seachem Prime, great value for the money.

Did you mean API Accu-Clear?

If so, no, it doesn't de-chlorinate your water. That's for cloudy water...

Go get some SeaChem Prime. It will de-chlorinate your water. It's super concentrated too so it will last a super long time.

Just searched up the ACCU-Clear, and it's just a water clarifier, not a dechlorinator. If I were you, I'd get a bottle of Seachem Prime. Prime is a really good dechlorinator, and a 500 mL bottle of it would last you a long time.

API Stresscoat+ and Seachem Prime both remove chlorine. Most people use Prime. I use the API because it has always worked well for me, and I figure why change what isn't broken. Either one will do the job though.

Are your fish and crabs still alive?

Activated carbon in the filter will also remove chlorine. But always dechlorinate before adding water. Activated carbon is for when there's tiny amounts of chlorine on your hands that you stick in the tank or something like that.

But if there's carbon in your tank, it probably really helped keep your fish healthy in this situation.

It all depends on your tap water. If you have water that has no ammonia or nitrates in it and low heavy metals, like mine, you can use the cheapest simple dechlorinator you can find. I use the Top Fin dechlorinator and have had no problems. I don't use any other conditioners. When I first set the tank up, I used the Tetra Complete Care kit which does have conditioners but nothing but the Top Fin since. If your water contains more contaminants, then you may need something like Prime. It all depends.

I was just always wondering why my fish kept dying when I was doing everything right. And why my water was showing high GH . And it all makes sense now. That's why. I got conditioner for it now. Definitely going to be doing it the right way now .But the water must not be too too bad .Bc some fish ive had since the beginning like my rainbow shark and pleco are still alive and grew to full size.

Sorry didnt see your question lol. Yes they are ☺ thank goodness!

Yes that must be why they all didnt die right away, some are still alive and ive had them since the beginning. Two glofish, rainbow shark, and pleco!

I have two faucets, one with unfiltered tap water, and one with filtered tap water. I have used a declorinator, but only half of the amount I should use for my 5.5 gallon aquarium, since my (other) tap water is completely filtered. I put it just to be sure, it's better to be safe than sorry! I would recommend using a conditioner. It could've been the reason why you might've not been successful after all. Hope I helped.

Seachem prime is the only dechlor you should really use and it's great just incase you have a cycle crash or ammonia spike or something to help while it fixes itself.
