Should I Fit A Power Head To My Aquarium?

HI Guys,

Opinions please

Should I fit a power head (I already have one) to my aquarium
it's only going to have small fish in it so I think the level of flow I have already is sufficient?

But if it's going to be beneficial to my fish or tank I'm all for it, just not sure where the best place to fit it would be, the spray bar from the filter is on the left hand side. If I mount it on the right pointing towards the spray bar (angled up to agitate the surface) would that work or am I just going to turn my tank into a whirl pool?

Cheers

Alec

Do you have hillstream fish? If not, I do not think it is necessary.

HI and welcome to Fishlore!

I just wanted to say that you have a beautiful, healthy-looking and serene setup.

Regarding the powerhead: it depends on why you need it. Add flow? Help with maintenance by pushing waste toward the filter?

Thanks . I guess the main reason is my previous tank set up had no flow really as the filter was a lot smaller, and ended up with a film on the surface.

But for this set up I over specced the filter which gives a pretty decent flow plus have an air stone so didn't think the power head was worth bothering with... Unless any of you experts reckon it's a good idea?

Thanks for the feedback

I use a powerhead (two, actually) because I have panda loaches, and they require a hillstream setup with a lot of highly oxygenated water. Otherwise, I use one or two airstones with my other tanks. Those, coupled with the filter output are enough to keep the water disturbed so that no “film” develops.

Also, depending on the fish, they may prefer calmer water. Corydoras, for example, don’t like a heavy flow.

So far just plattys but in the future I want to add some tetras and maybe some Cory's so I'm thinking the power head is redundant...

I'd say yes, it looks like you have very little flow in there. Shouldn't need much for a small tank like that.

Thanks guys. I decided to return the powerhead to the Amazon as I really don't need it in my little tank
