There is this Mexican tetra that lives in caves and is born blind. They act like any other fish. Just like blind people can adapt to their new conditions I believe fish can too.
It is up to you. Personally I would give her some time.

Yes I will try to help her as much as I can

I'd give it a few days and feed with tweezers. Swelling from trauma can cause temporary blindness. I'd do it just to be sure....

Hope she's doing better!

Really, the cichlid will be fine with proper care. I've personally known a comet who was completely blind yet was the most aggressive and active fish out of all in the pond. Just keep an extra eye on her for quite a while, and I guarantee that you'll see her swimming around as happily as her non-blinded counterparts

Is there anything I can do to prevent the injuries on her eyes from becoming infected?

FlutterFish
  • #46
Good water quality prevents most infections.

Clean water. Daily small water changes plus cycled media would make sure she does not get an infection.

A methaline blue bath could help too, might help with stress too

Don't think OP necessarily needs any meds right now - water changes will be the best solution.

However, if your fish does seem stressed, aquarium salt or methylene blue will help. But no meds is sufficient for now.

She actually seems pretty chilled out now. She was extremely stressed out before but I think she has calmed down a bit. She is slowly swimming around the tank

I hope she gets better soon! Please keep us posted on how she's doing over the next few days, weeks, whatever! Best of luck to you and your cichlid!

I dunno, I suppose I apologize for offending anyone; however, I'm not sorry cuz I said it on purpose. I try my best as a scientist to refrain from judgements and focus on facts and rational ethics. I think I take pretty good care of my fish. I got 5 tanks.
Let's just say one was a breeder and I'm sure with the for-lack-of-a-better-term "bleeding heart" mentality (note "opinion" in-coming) I would likely not buy any specimens from tht person because the specimens would be mediocre in show quality because (now I'm guessing) that person would be too afraid to cull(go ahead and try to find homes for all the fry, most will end up as food or mistreated in a cramped and crowded tank). the point being made here becomes moot when you assign human qualities to non-humans when discussing pet ethics. it becomes about one's morality and love of the individual. I cried when my pet hamster died, cuz he was born with no teeth and was very very special, lived to ripe old age of 3yrs cuz I specially ground up his food. but I don't bloody cry when I failed a recently brought home neon from the store and its stuck to a filter in the hospital tank.

please, keep it to the facts. anyways, good luck to the OP

a bit of salt, since I'm guessing its african, it can handle like from 1-4 tsps per 10 gallons gradually

The OP has concluded that they will take care of the fish because they are willing to extensively care for them. We could possibly start a debate like this in another thread, but right now this is irrelevant.

What does culling have to do with taking care of a fish that you bought? You bought a fish and you have to take care of him, whether he is blind or not that does not matter. The fact that someone culls or not means nothing for the quality of the fish. I don't cull my Molly fry but I also do not let fish with undesirable traits breed, I just simply sell it, giving him a chance at having a good life. The excuse that they may end up as food is not an argument for killing fry that you can sell/give away, just as the fish can end up in a bowl he can also end up in a good home, if you can not sell the fry or give it away and have to end up killing unwanted fish maybe breeding is not for you.
We asign human qualities to animals because that is the only point for comparison we have. I don't know how you could talk about pet ethics without asigning some sort of human quality to animals.

the OP is a breeder and so I thought it was relevant to add for future thought on what happens to unprepared breeders without a plan, despite being tangential to the topic.

I'm prepping an EBJD breeding plan. I hear those are some of the toughest to breed in the hobby. and I have a plan, the F1 generation with have to all be kept around so I can select a blue gene female. the original female will have to be either traded or sold to the LFS to hopefully be sold to a responsible keeper (I cannot simply "cull" Jackie). breed father(EB) to daughter(EB gene carrier). then 50% of the fry will be EB, I have to feed the EB gene carriers to my Angels (gassed with dry-ice plus water in a bag then strained) cuz I know my LFS won't want them and I don't want to waste resources on them when I got super delicate pure EB fry. then after all that ill hopefully have a few dozen 1 inch babies. that's my plan, we will see how well it goes.

I think my opinions posted on this forum have value
I know it's a flaw of mine, but I get offended when people choose to not understand my rationale and logical arguments

Very good arguments everyone, culling and euthanasia are tough topics and opinions can and will vary. Let's try to focus on helping OP now that they have decided to keep the cichlid.
OP, if you have some StressCoat on hand, it might help to supplement your regular water conditioner with that for the next few pwcs. I really hope your fish recovers and can live a relatively normal life Best of luck to you and your cichlid, I'll be watching this thread closely and helping where I can

Rational and logical arguments? All you did was to wrongly use the word "humane" and post some other nonsense about fish ethics.

Stop responding to him. Seriously make a new thread or talk to him in private chat. You are side tracking from the OP just as much by responding.

To note I am not saying this due to my opinion on the matter. It's just annoying.

I know it is annoying and I apologize, it is also annoying to have him contact me via chat to tell me some unrelated non-sense.
I am new to dealing with this kind of stuff, sorry
