Should I breed guppies?

I'm thinking about getting some guppies and breeding them
I don't want to get over run by guppies though.
Then maybe I could sell them on kijiji, does anyone have experience or advice?
Thanks

I just started the guppy breeding hobby. currently my female is seperated with another female fish because i let my selected guppy breed with her. I just chose the one i thought would provide the best color output and is the strongest fish in the tank IMO. I saw with my own eyes that my 2 guppies mated multiple times so im 100% sure shes pregnant. Im expecting fry within a month. You NEED to have a place for the female to hide when they are in the breeding tank, otherwise she gets tired and will start chasing him away. Also you need to decide how many fry you want. If you want less use natural selection and leave the female guppy in the tank with some plants when she gives birth. If you want more fry then remove the female guppy immediately.

I don't know.... I'm not an expert, just a beginner, but I think you'd have to have a very reliable selling place. Guppies hatch a lot of babies. And since they're easy to breed, pet stores might not want to buy from you. Just a thought, totally up to you

Its hard to get good colors.
Generally people look for mosaic tail guppies, cobra guppies, tuxedo guppies, and fancy guppies.
Guppies that generate no color after growth are feeder fish. I cant really give you an explanation on how to get exact colors. But im mixing a blue guppy with a red guppy and hoping for some purple fry lol. Also you can tweak the PH parameters to get more males/females etc. You should also look into live food for guppies. You can use insanely crushed up flakes, but they need fiber some how.

Why? For fun? Go right ahead. Sounds like you're not even sure.

Guppies give live birth, and they will give a lot if babies. Some people will sell them on ebay or possibly craiglist. There might be a local fish club you can give them away to(correct me if i"m wrong). I know some endlers are rare, usually the rare ones are expensive though. Idk much about selling guppies and breeding them, I know emeraldking knows a lot about guppies though.

Yes it requires passion. I have watched hours of videos and research to learn what i know to simply breed them.

I don't think you do if you think breeding blue and red might get you purple . . . This isn't mixing paints together. Like I said to the OP, if you want to do it just for fun, go for it.

Lol! Thats what i was hoping for at least. Its my first go. Currently i also have a female betta that is an eggbearer with her. She is next up on the breeding list. After breeding guppy and betta's im moving on to saltwater tanks and clownfish. Not really for fun. But more of my hobby now.

Haha as someone who paints I found that funny. Op if you want to breed them, go ahead its really easy just make sure you have some way you can reliably sell or give away the fry from time to time.

OK I think I'll try it out in the near future, right now the pet stores near me won't sell fish.

Breeding guppies can be done randomly. Surprise for what will come out...
You could also try to linebreed for specific traits. Takes more time, effort and patience. And be sure that the females used will be clean or virgins. Otherwise, it´s of no use to linebreed.

A color that´s rare? Depends on what you consider to be rare... Sometimes depending on your location certain colorations or patterns don't or hardly occur with people who keep and breed guppies. Or do you mean nation or world wide?

You could also look at what kind of traits you'd like to see in a guppy and work on that...

By rare, I basically just mean colours that aren't common word wide.
They don't have to be really "rare" just not common.

Well, in the show guppy world there are way more colors available and therefore more common in that scene. But commericalwise, a lot of the colorations of the show guppy world are less common till even rare. Take platinum for instance. It does add a classy look to a guppy.

Or big ear dragons?

Or tuxedo red koi guppies?

All interesting kinds of guppies that may trigger ones attention. But of course there are way more that might be interesting.
