Hello! I just decided to share this story about those experiences that new fishkeepers or maybe some fishkeepers go through. Keep in mind that everything that happened in this story was due to my lack of knowledge. I knew NOTHING about fishkeeping. By nothing I mean N O T H I N G. I hope the Fish Gods will forgive me lol. Read on!
Okay so..
Like some of you may know or not know, I love fish as pets and aquariums. About 4 years ago, my parents surprised me with an Aqueon 0.5-Gallon Betta Bowl Desktop Aquarium Kit. When I saw it I was very excited and happy and couldn't wait to get a fish. That same day we set it up and everything. We put gravel and 1 fake plant on each side; since there would be two bettas. Then, we added tap water into bowl and called it a day. Everything was "fine" in my eyes.
About 2 days later, my dad ran to the store and bought me my first fish. It was an orange veiltail betta. When he came into the house, I myself was excited and my siblings were interested as well. I then poured the Betta directly into the bowl, and watched it swim in its new environment. I was happy with myself as officially having a pet. I went to bed that day and you could probably guess what happened next. You guessed -----> I woke up to find my Betta upside down at the surface of the tank.
I was bummed out and unhappy. It didn't even occur to me as to why my Betta would have died. So with my young self, I asked my dad to buy a new one and on that same day, he did! This time it was a purple betta! Now before we added it to the tank we wanted to clean the tank and everything. We poured out all of the water and washed it with soap on all the fixings. While we were washing it, I literally put my Betta on a newspaper (idk why) thennn I put the Betta in. My Betta was swimming as normal as usual and I was proud of myself. Well like they say, all good things come to an end. So I woke up the next morning and the Betta had died, AGAIN! I was angry/sad for some time before I asked my dad to purchase another one.
So my dad eventually purchased a 3rd Betta and this time the Betta was light blue (very pretty). I was happy and all and hoped that it wouldn't die this time. Although I hoped and hoped the Betta STILL died the next day. :/
Long story short, after that, my dad didn't buy any more fish. Fast forward 4 years, and here I am! I have a 10 gallon that it's in the process of being cycled with a filter, heater, thermometer and everything. I'm on FishLore and preparing to buy a Betta that hopefully will not die. (lol) Fast forward four more years and hopefully, I'll have my own Saltwater tank with other planted tanks as well.
If you asked me what the moral of the story is, well here it is:
Don't rush into anything without knowing what you're getting yourself into. Behaving on impulse can lead to a lot of effects later.
